General 10 Gauge question.

First of all, I'll freely admit that I know next to nothing of shotguns save for general operation and maintenance.

I was recently have a conversation regarding the range a 10 gauge payload would lose the ability to penetrate a target (i.e. a human or animal). No special powder loads or chokes, just default settings so to speak.

Anyone who can shed some light on this subject would be most appreciated.

range

penetration will depend on range regardless of gauge.
A #5 pellet is said to be able to penetrate a turkey skull out to 40 yards.
10 and 12 have similar velocity just different amounts of lead.

Hmm...

So essentially, standing around 330 feet away (110 yards) is far enough for the pellets to lose their penetration capability?

First off, I could be 100% wrong...
it is my limited understanding that bore size has little to with velocity or range at least once on out a few yards. It is all about laws of physics with the pellet mass and volume. The bore size really just give you more payload. Shell length gives more payload and a little more powder charge. So short of just a little variation at closer range, they all likely peter out at about the same distance given equal size pellets.

Pellets - maybe (I would not volunteer to be the guinea pig...)

buckshot or slug would go farther with sufficent power to penetrate, I would think...
