Geeks and Guns

I started my new Job yesterday. For those of you who don't know I lost a job that I really liked a few months ago due to some Nasty Office Politics.
Well I have been floating in Limbo living off a part time Job and Unemployment, and gift certificates to the local gun store :) Well Last week I got a call telling me I had gotten my dream job. NOC technician at a New Data Center in Louisville, KY.
www.xodiax.com (shameless plug for any business owners in the area.

Now for the down side. It is on a Hospital campus so no guns allowed. They have to be locked in my glove box while on the property. However considering the Security I am not worried. Well, security wise this place is awesome. Almost every room is locked and you need a magnetic key card to get in. There is a Man trap in part of the building that you need a Hand scan to get through in addition to the key card. There is also 24/7 security guards in the area. There is even an escape tunnel under the building that we can get to. The whole place can be locked down from the NOC room and we have cameras everywhere to keep an eye on things.. And finally the walls are 12-18 inch Steel reinforced Concrete. You need a Friggin tank to get into this place.
All right now back to the geeks with guns. LOL

I was sitting in the NOC room waiting for the boss to come in and get me in the security system. Three other guys are in there with me and I am wanting to talk to them but not sure how to approach the question or Guns in the building (this was before I realized that we were covered by the Hospital Campus). Well in comes the boss and one of the guys asks him if they were all still on for Rays that night. Rays is one of the local indoor ranges and gun shops. They all turn to me and asked if I liked to shot. You can all imagine where it went from there. I have a great job making $10,000 more than my last job, and I work with avid shooters. The only downside is not being able to carry at work and they are all pissed about that also. But as I said earlier, the security is very good and there are guards in the area and even the Parking Garage. Overall I think I did good :)

Congrats! Xodiax must be new since I left Louahvul - glad to hear that you are in the company of like minded individuals.

There's plenty of gun stores around, and plenty of Good Eats as well! You'll like it there.

Yeah sparks they have only officialy been open since June 1. I am the first outside employee they have hired. THey are backed by IBM and Vencor. (actually the guy that backed Vencor) They already have a good customer base. ANd with the extra money maybe I can get that Preban I have been wanting. =-)

A hearty congratulations to you.

Interesting, though, the same thing happened to me. Office politics really stinks! It was a good job, now I'm looking at something that pays half as much :( but has more opportunity for advancement. And I'm reading Machiavelli and some books on dealing with office politics!

Glad to hear it, Kevin. Good luck! Melissa just got offered TWO dream jobs doing two very different kinds of special ed in two different schools--but the same pay, benefits, and roughly the same commute. She's tearing her hair out trying to decide!

Have fun.

And if you didn't live in Louisville or KY before this job, realize that you're a hop, skip, and a jump from the Knob Creek full-auto shoots. Never been to one myself, as I no long live in the area, but it's between you and Fort Knox off of 31W.

I need to make the time to get up there one year.

Hutch, I had the same question. You just got to it first.

Teach a kid to shoot.
It annoys the antis.

Bulldog you have it. :)
Network Operations Center. Think of it As mision control. Basicly we Put together the network and get the customers confugured. We monitor the network for any problem, Latency, ping attacks, Hackers, Or even just plain acts of god that make stuff break. And then if something does happen we fix it. There is a lot involved, but if I told you I would ahve to kill you and it would be expensive since there are 6000+ people here now :)
