Gaston Glock Converts Another One

Thirty years ago my best friend bought a first gen G17. There was no end to the joy I had teasing him about his Tupperware Pistol and extolling the many virtues of my High-Power and 1911s. I assured him the gun was a passing fad and everyone would stick by the tried and true John Moses Browning designs (ignoring for the time the contribution the master had made to the Glock operating system). He took the ribbing and gave it right back in kind – continuing to shoot away with his monstrously ugly gun.

As the years went by I eventually acquired a G21 SF, put a Glockworx trigger and XS sights on it. I’d even take it out to the range occasionally but I did not love the gun. It was damned reliable though if a little on the bulky, blocky side. I continued to carry a Colt Commander worked over by Novak. Then I picked up a used G32 because I could get the ammo for free from my employer. Snappy and a bright muzzle signature in low light, but an okay shooter. Some more years went by and I actually got excited about the G30S. Took the plunge and bought one. I enjoyed it even more than the big 21 and I used for semi-annual qualifications for a few cycles.

Lately I’ve found myself enamored of the Sig P22X series. Picked up a 227 and it is still my bedside gun with a light mounted – but I don’t carry it. I liked the Elite grips so much I had to get a 226 – sort of a little bro to the 227. I actually carried it for about a month and am still inclined to in the winter months. Those 18 rounds sure trump my 8+1.

My son, recently went to work for uncle as a spook, and started extolling the virtue of the Gen 4 G19. As he put it, “It’s a work gun dad.” Well, last Friday I caved and went and bought one. I immediately added the medium beavertail grip to it because I like to really snuggle up to a pistol.

This morning was the first chance to get it to the range. All I can say is that I am truly impressed. I put 30 rounds of Remington Golden Sabre +P through it to start. Cool. Then I ate through 300 rounds of WWB. I barely gave the gun a break. The barrel got hot enough to give me a second degree burn on my forearm when I accidentally brushed it. Now, I broke all the rules. This gun was run straight out of the box. No initial break down, no initial cleaning (I did check the barrel to be sure it was free of obstructions). Just took it out and shot it.

I was shooting steel ¼ scale silhouettes and I ran double taps, I ran failure drills, I ran 1 to 5 drills, I ran one, one, and one followed by double taps. I ran the snot out of that little gun. Not once did it choke and puke. Not one single failure to function, none, not one. I’d bought two extra magazines and I just kept stepping back to the bench and stoking them all to the brim and kept shooting until I’d exhausted my ammo supply (and myself). I am truly impressed with the utility and reliability of this pistol.

And it conceals well. I was using an old-style Bladetech (the heavy Kydex kind – it was actually for my G32). I also picked up a cheap IWB DeSantis when I bought the gun. Summer or winter, I can make this gun disappear on my person.

Now, I’d not be willing to say I’m a fanboy, but I find myself owning 4 of the darn things and I really, really like this G19. And my son was right, it is a work gun. Won’t win any beauty prizes but if I have to pull it, I know it’ll do its part.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. . . I only own one Glock, but it's also a Gen 4 G19. It's a really good combination of size, weight, capacity, etc.

Congratulations on the new pistol and welcome to the club!

Add an extended slide release, by Glock, Truglo fiber optic sights, snip the bottom corner off the magazine release. It digs into the finger. Does mine.

Carry a spare magazine, a Glock 17 one.

No, no, no! I CAN NOT belong to the Glock club, its agin my 'ligion.

Actually glad to see so many satisfied users. If I knew what I know now and had it all to do again, I'd own just this one.

The G19, in particular, is perhaps the most optimum in proportions of any semi-auto handgun.

Reasonably concealable, effective cartridge, good potential for volume of fire (if necessary in a pistol), approachable price.

Everyone should have one.

Yeah, like I said, your particular situation sounds familiar . . . I spent many years actively disliking Glocks. Didn't want one, didn't want to shoot one, no way, no how. Then I met Gretchen. That was just over 2 years ago, and she's my EDC about 95% of the time now.

And as Tom Servo pointed out to me in the linked thread:

Of course! We don't discriminate based on the age of your G19! :p

Same here. 800 rds down the tube with no problems except for a bad box of Blazer Brass one time.
I'm about two years and ~1200 years into owning mine. I can't say that she's been flawless, but she's been very good.

Ike, FWIW, I've had three problems: (1) an ammo-related failure to feed; (2) a magazine spring related FTF; and (3) my slide lock spring broke at about 400 rounds. Nothing to be done about Problem #1. I bought used magazines, so I just had to replace the springs in them. Problem #2 solved. Problem #3, though, really caught me off guard. A little googling also led me to believe that Problem #3 isn't entirely unheard of. If I were to go back 2 years, I'd buy a couple of slide lock springs just to keep on hand. It's about a $3 part and a 2-minute fix, as long as the broken spring comes out of the frame entirely.

The news now says Glocks are unsafe for cops... something about pulling the trigger and the gun goes 'bang'.

Who knew!

I've used Glocks since maybe 15 years ago. I have not had ONE AD/ND with any of them and I used them in IDPA, IPSC, Steal Challenge, many gun seminars, CHL qualifications, and CCW carry.

Yes runn'en and gunn'en matches. Even the Glock .vs. 1911 matches where we shot 1000 rounds strait without any cleaning.

And yes I carry them chamber loaded.

While have other guns, I do pack my Glock 26 daily.

I picked up my leo trade in Glock 19 a few months back. I absolutely love it. I was(and still am)a huge fan of SIG, but your description nailed it. It's a work gun. It's a tool. It ain't pretty, but it's perfect for its job. I still love shooting my P220, but the 19 is what stays on my hip.

10 years or so ago, I owned a few Glocks. I ended up getting rid of them for one reason or another. I just had many ideas about them set in stone in my head. That other pistols had better ergonomics, were more accurate, would point more naturally, etc. I ended up ignoring Glocks for a decade because of this.

I purchased a Glock 20SF a few months ago, and that was all it took. I shot it very accurately, it points naturally for me, and it fits my hand well. It left me thinking "Where did I get these negative ideas about Glocks?" The sole reason for getting the 20SF was because I wanted a 10mm, and the Glock was the best all around choice IMO. It is an excellent pistol and I was very impressed with it overall, and how well I was able to shoot with it.

I have since sold or traded most of my pistols and replaced them with Glocks. I am very happy with all of them so far. I need to take my new 43 to the range soon as well. That was my latest acquisition.

Spats, I actually had problem #3 with my G32. I bought it used at the LGS. After a little research I found out why it had come in on a trade - constant FTF. I took it to a good armorer and he discovered that the spring had been replaced - and it was replaced with the wrong part. He put the correct part in and the gun has run fine ever since.

I suspect the original spring had failed early in the gun's history and was then surrendered for repair to an inept armorer.

That is me, too. It is my only Glock. I have other pistols with which I am somewhat more accurate, and which are certainly more handsome, but none more reliable.

There is a T-shirt floating around that you have probably seen: "I show my 1911 to my friends, and my Glock to my enemies." Not too far off for some of us, I guess.
