Gas Cutting?? Normal??

I just bought a Model 18-4 looks like it wasn't used very much at all. After about 500 rounds I am getting a line cut on the top strap above the forcing cone. It is not too bad yet but its only 500 rounds is this normal?

It's certainly normal in the centerfire models. Since .22s are normally quite a bit filthier, I suppose it stands to reason it would be subject to the same characteristics. BTW, I'm of the opinion that's it's due more to the abrasiveness of the power and carbon that's wearing the area.

VictorLouis,

Thanks, I just noticed the line yesterday and wondered if it was normal having such a low round count. Could it be the cheap ammo I am using (Remington & Federal bulk pack) ?

You will always have the line even after a few lines. It's nothing to be alarmed about until it starts flame cutting a deep groove into the top strap. hpg:cool:

Some say that if you don't clean that area of the top strap thoroughly....a little build up will protect the metal from the blast.

stoic, I thought I was alone!:D I've been wondering about that since their introduction. AFAIK, I've never even seen it pointed out in review articles.(Don't mean to hijack the thread).

A tip I picked up from the late Dr. Walt Welch:
Take a #2 pencil and write on the top strap where the gas cutting is. The graphite will eliminate the gas cutting.
Don't know for sure if it works but since it's so simple and quick to do I figure it can't hurt to do it anyhow.
The late Dr. knew quite a bit about Colt Gold Cups, Porches and metals.
