Garret competition in a Mountain Gun?

Hi all,

Just picked up and test fired some of Federal's answer to Randy Garret's loads in .44 Mag. The local GS charged me 24 bucks for a box of 300 grain "Castcore".

I fired ten rounds through my mountain gun and got good accuracy at 25 yards (for me). The recoil was actually less than some 270 grain Speer Gold Dots that I also tried. Both loads grouped in about 4 inches or so. The recoil was not bad at all with either - but I was quite satisfied with shooting 20 rounds or so of both.

The 300 grain Federal seems hard. I tried the time honored "fingernail" test and they were harder than some GA reloads. Big meplat and lots of lead showing.

Anybody have a better test for the hardness? Range is indoors, so was unable to do any decent ballistic tests.

As soon as I can put a couple in a hog, I'll get back with the results.
