Does anyone know if the Galil is still in Israeli service. All the recent news footage show Israeli soldiers with M16's and variants.

I'm a great admirer of the Israeli military and once ask a Spec ops guy the same question. He said they use the M-16s because they are free
Not the answer I was expecting but an answer it was :)

Friend of mine in qm there tole me 3 yrs ago that "the things are just too damn heavy to haul around all day".

Ain't no frontlines in Israel, anywhere can become a hot zone PDQ.

It's cost effectiveness. the M-16s are either cheap or free, the Galil costs money to make.

from Day I, one of the pluses of the Uzi has been its relative inexpense. Israel has always had economic problems, and the bottom line has been the ruling factor in many decisions.

YES ! And popular among the soldiers !!!
I visited the country in November 1999 and the popularity on the streets was:
Galil - 40% Primarily active forces
Uzi - 20% Primarily security forces
M-16's - 40% Primarily active forces

A friend of mine (x israel front lines soldier living in Israel) told me that it is all the matter of training (his weapon of choice was Galil)

P.S. Nothing is free, even in Israel...
