Galco Wheelgunner Holster Review

I've been using the Galco Wheelgunner holster for about a month now. I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents on the pile for those in hunt for holster or those considering buying this one.

I bought this holster for my S&W Model 10 with a 4" heavy barrel. I wanted a traditional looking holster and was intrigued by the high carry option.

While it's not stated outright, it's inferred that you can carry concealed with this rig. I'm about 5'8" and moderately built, and I'm not hiding a K-frame unless I'm wearing a trench coat. This holster sure isn't going to change that.

That being said, I didn't buy it so I could pack a Model 10 under a t-shirt.

The holster does allow for high carry, and despite having an extra layer of leather around the middle, it's pretty slim. I wear 2 inch belts, and the holster only extends another 2 inches below my belt.

I initially thought it would be top heavy, but the way the holster is designed makes it very secure. It's very easy to sit with the holster on as well.

Galco makes a great holster. The leather is stiff and looks great.

The retention is a bit strange. The gun is held in primarily by friction, but there is also a small tab comes up over the rear sight and loops over the hammer. It's not the quickest thing to get off, and it looks like it might be a weak point with some pretty thin bits of leather that might break.

The multiple layers of leather also cause the rig to squeak and creek a bit when you bend over, but this might work itself out after some more breaking in.

There is also the option to quickly remove the holstered gun leaving behind only a strap of leather on your belt. This functionality also allows you to reverse the holster if you're left handed.

Overall, I think it's a good option for open carry, particularly if you'll be sitting down for any amount of time. Perfect for fishing trips.

These seem to be made for K/L frame revolvers and then a separate size for N frame revolvers.

I hope they add an option for j-frames, because then it would definitely be an option for concealed use.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. JERRYS - here's your pics. I'm a photographer by trade, hence the shirt, lol.

As you can see, it rides tight against my body. If I were a bit bigger, I wouldn't hesitate to carry concealed with it.
