Gain Twist Barrels

I'm doing some research for a friend who's looking to build a .300 Win. Mag.
rifle. Rifle will be used strictly for long range target shooting(1000
matches). Barrel will be probably be 26" maybe longer shooting probably
180-190 gr. match BT bullets, also possibly heavier. He wanted to go with a
gain twist bbl. Any opinions or knowledge on these bbls would be
appreciated and what advantage or disadvantage can be expected. Also if you
know what barrel manufacturers currently manufacture gain twist bbls.

P.S. Accuracy is definitely more important than an increase in velocity to
this person.

He will gain absolutely nothing except to degrade the potential accuracy by using a gain twist barrel. If he wants the very most accurate rifle he can build then tell him to use either a Schnider or Lilja barrel and chamber it with JGS reamers. Use A Remington 700 action and the best fiberglass stock he can find. Shoot 70.2 grains of 4350 behind a 190 Sierra match king that is just touching the rifling.
 
Gain twists were popular among the black powder shooters. I don't think it offers any advantage to a high velocity bullet.

There was an article in Precision Shooting a few issues ago where the writer looked at the gain twist barrels for jacketd bullets. Bottom line was they were good for lead bullets but bad for jacketed bullets. Tell him to stick with a high quality barrel from one of the better barrel makers noted below.

Gale, any opinion about Kreiger, HS Precision, Lothar Walther, or Hart? for 700 aciton in 06 or 300 win.

Oberkommando of the choices there would only be one I would consider. Hart. The reason being that of the other two are cut and one is hammerforged If accuracy is the objective the Hart button barrel would be my pick. When I have a choice I use Lilja or Schnider since I quit making barrels. Both are considered bench rest match quality along with Hart.Make it a 12 twist and don't shoot over 190 grain bullets otherwise it doesn't make any difference.
