G36c Parts kit? Has anyone actually done this before?

I was browsing around and I came across this, and it caught my eye.

Apparently it looks like you can get a parts kit to modify an existing HK SL8. Now as I understand it, you have to have a number of things on the gun that was made in the USA to keep the gun 922r compliant.

The parts that can be used to remain 922r compliant if I recall are as follows. At least 10 parts need to be made in America if I recall.

Receiver, Barrel ,Barrel extensions, Mounting block (front trunion), Muzzle attachment, Bolt ,Bolt carrier, Operating rods (cocking handle), Gas piston, Trigger housing, Trigger, Hammer, Sear, Disconnector, Buttstock, Pistol grip, forearm, handguard, Magazine body, Follower, and Floorplate.

Has anyone here had experience in using a kit like this? How difficult is it, I of course can only dream of ever having a disposable income so large that I can buy a kit like this and the base rifle to build this, but for curiosities sake, what would I need to build this rifle legally?

I've always loved the look of this rifle, and if I can indeed own/build one of my own, I'd certainly like to. (A dream project if you will)
 
5 US-made parts are required for 922(r), and from what I understand, those are only needed to sell the gun.

You could buy an M4 barrel, turn it down and use a flash hider made here to get 2 of them.

Also, that is a short barreled rifle as pictured, once you have a receiver to put it on.
 
I'm sorry, I'm still learning about gun terminology and such, can you please explain to me what you mean by "turn down" the barrel?
 
Anything less than a 16 inch barrel reqires a SBR tax stamp, FBI checkup and permit. Besides where do you plan on getting a receiver for that weapon??? Not many laying around your LGS.

I don't think I need a permit in Arizona for an SBR, though I am trying to get a definitive answer on that, so I'm still looking it up. So far nothing seems to indicate that I need to have a permit on an SBR weapon other than I need to have it registered with the ATF and fill out the proper forms and pass the background checks and get my local CLEO to sign off on the form.

The upper receiver if I recall from some research is able to be mated with an SL8 lower, though I'm still making sure this is the case.

This is a curiosity of mine, I don't foresee myself doing this any time soon, but for future reference, it certainly would be nice having the information to fall back on.

If I ever had the money, I'd certainly want one of these, probably the only firearm I'd ever consider spending this much money on for a rifle without optics and such.

For 922r you need to determine what parts on the list are actually on the gun you are building. Then you need to replace enough parts with U.S. parts so you don't have more than 10 foreign parts on that list.

922r only applies to rifle builds and not pistols. If you build it without a but stock you won't have to deal with 922r or SBR tax. If it were me though, I would leave the but stock on.

Check out Gunco.net, Weapons Guild, and Weaponeer for information on builds. They have some very knowledgeable people there who have done some pretty talented builds. Although, you may have to join to see all the information there.
 
For what it's worth, go for it. The G36C is a great rifle, real well balanced. I fired one at a Bundeswehr base while stationed in Germany, it's accurate and a blast to shoot.
 
You absolutely do need an SBR for any shorter than 16 inch rifle in Arizona .Were it a pistol without a rear stock you would not need an SBR.
 
Thanks, I've found a few answers from HKpro.com and from Weapons Guild.net as well.

Looks like I'll just have to choke back the cost and have a professional do some of the work for me. The way I understand it so far is that the normal SL8 mag wells cannot accept double stack magazines like those of AR's and the original G36 magazines, thus I need to have a modified mag well installed, furthermore, there are some minor fitting issues with the upper receiver of the G36 parts kit with an SL8 lower that needs to be properly milled in order to mate it.

The folding stock is another issue that needs to be addressed by a skilled HK smith, and I think I've found several well known smiths who can work on this for me once I've got the cash to do so. I still have a crap ton of unanswered questions sadly, like what additional parts I may need (If I understand correctly, you don't quite have everything required for the rifle in the parts kit) and I need to figure out what parts I need to swap out in order to get the rifle to be 922r compliant.

It's been a headache of sorts, but I certainly have been learning a lot. Anyone who could give me any more info on this I'd greatly appreciate it. Currently I've been hopping between 4 forums trying to get answers, this build certainly is not something that's easily referenced for newbies.

If/whenever I build this rifle, I'll be sure to post the process I went through so other folks won't have to go through all this digging (Or at least as much of it).
 
Well done on going the gunsmith route. I'm all for learning everything I can about firearms, but sometimes, you just have to let an expert handle it. Some guys don't quite understand that last point.

Best of luck on your build, I don't know of anyone in the States with a G36C. Definitely make sure your paperwork is straight for the SBR and keep us updated!
 
A few thoughts on this. If you add a US made flash hider it's not replacing a part so you will need one more. Also keep in mind that the stock and grip are one part on the sl8. If you add the g36 stock and grip you are adding 2 German parts to where you only removed one.

The common thought is 5 parts need to be changed but it's actually 6.
 
You can get a block from hdps that doest require smithing.

Easy parts to get for compliance are

Trigger
Piston op rod
Mag floor plate
Mag follower
M16 magwell and use GI mags will count as 3 parts
Piston
Barrel
G36 pmag will count as 3 if it ever comes out and you use the g36 magwell
Promag single stack mag counts as 3 if you keep the sl8 magwell
Bolt


Anyhow these conversions end up costing a lot. I personally like the chopstix chop conversion the best.
