G.W. Bush's record on 2nd amendment & gun control?

He did sign the CCW law :), but last I heard is that he supports a ban on "assault weapons" :(.

(I could be wrong on his AW stance. I heard it in passing on the news...)

God so values free will that He gave us all the freedom to turn our back on even Him. If liberty is that important to God, it should be that important to us all...

While he is certainly preferable to Mr. Gore, don't be surprised at all when he follows in his father's footsteps. It might not happen immediately, but it will happen.

But also look who he chose as his running Mate, Dick Cheney. One of the most pro-gun politicians out there.

Officially, Bush supports an instant background check at gun shows (and he has emphasized the word "instant"), supports voluntary distribution of trigger locks, and opposes any kind of licensing or registration. While I'm not happy that he supports any kind of controls at all, I don't think it's an issue that he will pursue as did Clinton and Gore. We'll see, or we may never get to see.

Well, he got us the Concealed Handgun License passed. And he did sign the law forbidding municipalities to sue gun makers -- most importantly, he signed the bill into law during the height of the Columbine furor. We can think of some other politicians who didn't have the stones and folded their cards after Columbine.

If you listen to the National Commun--I'm sorry, the Democrats, Bush loosened the restriction on concealed carry in churches.

More importantly, he's got Cheney as a running mate -- who has been good to the Second Amendment -- and Condeleeza Rice is a close advisor to Bush. Ms. Rice's views on the Second Amendment are just to the right of Charlton Heston.

I would like to hear what Cheney has done/not done in connection to gun legislation.

Reason I posted the question about Bush in the first place, was IIRC Bush Sr. targeted "assault weapons" with an executive order or some such? Is my memory foggier than normal? Or am I correctly remembering what Bush Sr. did?

Glamdring, you are correct about President GH
Bush. But GW is not his father. As for Cheney, he's been chastised in the media for being one of only two congressmen to vote against a ban on plastic guns. If you ever see a plastic gun that works, let us all know. In fact, notify the Pentagon. Cheney is as pro-2nd as they come. Let's pray that his attitudes rub off on GW.
