I just recently purchased a few G.I mags for my 1911 45. They were individually wrapped with the following markings on the wrap. 19200
ASSY. 5508694
MFR. 30745
The floorplates on the mag are marked as above. Are these real G.I mags? I bought them for 5$ apiece. They are new, with some cosmoline on them. I havent tried them yet, are they supposed to be reliable? What company makes G.I mags for the 1911?

It looks like you got legit govt mags and they are good. I have a bunch of them and they are very combat reliable. BEWARE the ones stamped on the bottom with, "Colt .45 auto." They are rip offs and very bad for reliability. A REAL Colt mag will have the rampant colt stamped on it.
Others like Wilson, Meggar, Chip Wilson etc make some pretty good stuff. With ANY mag I make sure it functions before it gets my approval for carry. You can find some guns get pretty fussy about mags regardless of who made them.

Hi, guys,

Some of the new and not very good magazines are marked "COLT 45 AUTO", but that is also the way the factory mags were marked for many years, and not a rampant Colt to be seen. So it is necessary to know what you are looking at, but you can generally go by the price. Unless the seller is ignorant, a Colt factory mag will not be priced at $5.

Colt factory mag's won't be but some of the GI surplus ones might be. I picked up a few new in wrapper mags as described above at a gun show a couple months back. They were 3 for $20. the dealer told me that the Fed's released a big batch or surplus mags last year so they should be floating around out there in the $5 to $8 range or so.

I like the GI mags, I have about 8 McCormick 8 rounders and about the same of GI 7 rounders and I'm almost solely using the GI mags now. The McCormicks are decent but when shooting lead target loads I sometimes get a hangup on the 8th round. With GI mags these same rounds go through without a hitch.

Rogue, don't know the assembly # on my govt. mags cause I glued a bumper pad to each of mine. I bought 4 for %5 each at a Colorado gun show maybe 15 years ago. Never had a jam or failure to feed and I sometimes carry them on duty.

I bought two of the same surplus mags a few months ago at an Army Surplus store. After cleaning off the cosmoline, both fit fine. However, one mag had a bad spring straight from the wrapper. The mag wouldn't feed the last round at all. The other mag functioned flawlessly. So be sure to range test before you bet your life on them. Another thing, the GI mags won't feed hollow points either. Other than that, they are great mags. I'm going to buy more at the next gun show. Here in Cleveland, they range between 5 - 12 depending on where you go.
