Anyone know how bad nite vision is effected with a Compensated barrel? I just put down money on a G19C (Waiting for Maryland to approve me) however I've never owned a Compensated pistol before. I'm wondering if this is going to effect shot placement in low light situations. Any one with experiance be it range or confrontation, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks

This passed year, I've owned a G21c (which I've sold), shot a SA V-12, ported Colt Gold Cup, a compensated Caspian in 38 super, a Caspian Hybrid in 45 super and a ported 1911 in 357 sig.
My impression...
Unless you're caliber of choice is going to generate enough pressure to take advantage of the porting, don't bother getting it. Plus, if you're getting a gun that will take advantage of the pressures the caliber generates w/ porting, don't use it for defensive purposes...lots of flash, lots of debris, but FUN to shoot ;)
19c? Save a few bucks and get a plain ol' G19 ;)

The short answer is "It depends".

It depends on how bad the flash is from your chosen defensive ammo.

It depends on how you've trained (or if you've trained) to shoot from the retention position.

It depends on how sensitive your eyes are to muzzle flash in the first place.

The conventional wisdom is that it's a bad idea. Try shooting one in the dark and decide for yourself.

I almost picked up the 23c over the regular 23. After talking to some LEO and other people I opted for the Reg 23. Most reasons being they dont really help that much and if I ever shoot at night I wont be able to see very well afterwards.

A friend o' mine has a 19c. I will admit it's a blast to shoot. BUT, from a defensive standpoint, not for me. Not worth the extra money, or the hype. Doesn't do anything to enhance my abilities...especially when firing a 9mm. Just my thoughts...

Thanks for the input guys, I got a chance to fire it today in the dark as well as light...I shot some tight groups and tho in the dark it was bad I still hit the kill zone every time...unfortunatly the ffl ran my paper work for this particular glock already...so now its either buy it or piss him off heh...not sure I wana do that..either way I loved the gun so I guess thats all that matters. I have a glock 20 which I love as well...I think the 20C would be great.

Once again thanks for the input

I don't use ported handguns for defensive carry because of the gasses and debris that get thrown up at the body and face when shooting from a retention position, not because of the muzzle flash. (Which is still there even without porting.)

If you want to carry it, I suggest that you buy a second non-ported barrel for it.

It's not easy to shoot in the dark but one summer my shootin' buddy and I experimented with just such an situation. We we're out in the middle of nowhere on National Forest property and we had a "night shoot". We had no compensated handguns but I remember the "flash" being no problem when used with a flashlight.
My buddy had his USP45 with a tac-light and it was no problem either. I guess the additional light source takes away from the flash. I don't know. You might want to experiment. Using a flashlight might cancel out the effects of a compensated weapon. Good Luck, J. Parker
