Future of P99?

I have been hearing reports of the P99 being manufactured in MA by S/W, rather than imported from Germany. I am a tad concerned about the quality of workmanship coming out of the MA facility.

Can anyone comment on where this transition is going? Will the German proofed models still be available in the US? Should we 'stock up' on the Ulm proofmarked units now, before they're no longer available?

I currently own a pair of P99s (Military versions), both 100% German-made bearing the "eagle over N" proofmarks. One is 9mm, and the other .40 Auto. I just bought two more, again in 9mm and .40 Auto and bearing proofmarks, but this time in the all-black configuration.

As to whether the genuine German-made ones are a thing of the past, I seriously doubt that it'll come to that. The only ones that are partly made in the US are some of the .40 Auto ones. All of the 9mm ones are made in Germany. If you are at all concerned about this, I suggest that you send a polite and carefully-worded letter to Carl Walther in Germany, expressing your concerns about these hybrid P99s, and that you'd buy only 100% German-made ones. S&W to make P99

Apparently there has been some contractural agreement reached so that all P99's will be made in the US by S&W. It is my understanding that this will happen in the second half of this year.

I do know that all of the parts are already interchangeable and that the contract has some specific requiremnts for quality. I have heard that some of the production will still carry the Walther banner (like the PPK's did) but will not have the German proof marks.

I got this info from someone in S&W mgmt.

Sounds like it's a good thing I haven't already sold that German made 99 that I have. It might be a collector's item. ;)

I've read and had confirmed at the local gunshop that P99 slides will soon be marked s&w. I don't know if or how long people like Earl will still be able to supply German made. If you want a German made P99 now is a good time!

My old Interarms model is looking better all the time!! :D

This news also explains why there was a price decrease. Get rid of existing inventory!!

Might be a good time to get a P99, while they are still coming from the motherland.

Fatherland. Germany is the fatherland.
I agree with the point though. Just feel like quibbling today.

Well, somebody is giving false information and I hope that it is S&W. I already posted this question on the Walther Germany Website Forum and this was Walther's reply:

We would like to clear up a possible misunderstanding:

In the year 2001 a limited series "Walther P99 caliber .40" has been produced in cooperation with S&W. This was a unique action only and as far as we know the guns from this series are sold out already. Walther – Germany delivers to S&W only P99‘s that are 100 % made in Germany.

Best regards,
Carl Walther GmbH – Germany

So, it would seem that this is a false rumor.

The proofmark-less P99s are still in distribution channels, and right now it's hard to find a .40 Auto one that bears the "eagle over N" proofmarks.

Lately all the S&W made ones that I've been seeing are Military models. I've found a QPQ and all black .40 that have the proof marks.

Ok, guys... there still doesn't seem to be a consensus. I know some of you don't buy into the rumor about S/W taking over, but what worries me is that there's always a kernel of truth in many rumors.

Anyone have some recent, credible info to offer?

Ah, but to the rest of the world Russia is the "motherland"

Better get the Teutonic iron while you can fellas, I smell a Belgian Hi Power, Italian Beretta thing coming.

I just bought the olive/black P-99 in .40cal.How can I tell if it was made in Germany or by S&W?The right side of the slide says Walther USA LLC Springfield,MA.There was also a note in with the gun case saying all future repairs are to be sent to S&W.

I have found that what Walther Germany says is usually true. I've also found that S&W doesn't know one end of a P99 from the other end. I can't imagine that Germany would let S&W build the P99(Even though they already did....big mistake), on an ongoing basis. What would Walther do then? As far as I know they aren't building much else these days. They've totally stopped making the PP series pistols, and they may only be producing a few P5's anymore, so I would assume that they are totally capable of producing the P99.

KPS,

Look for the Eagle over the N proof marks. If they are there it is German. Also if the Laser engraving is Silvery in color it is probably S&W made.
