Further Walther P99 experiences..cut my hand!

Like I had mentioned earlier I had picked up a Walther P99 in 40 cal last Monday. Well I shot it again this weekend.. my girlfriend could nto get the hang of it and it kept jamming on her (both Type 3 and 4) and she has no problems with my Glock 22 40 cal..

I also notice the inside webbing between my thumb and index finger on my firing hand (right) was cut! Upon further examination of the gun I noticed that the holes on both sides of the grip above the back strap were the culprits. The one on the righ side was apparently catching the soft tissue of my hand and cutting it slowly. Looks like I might have to get some fine 1000 grit sand paper or something to smooth the holes out. I am now somewhat dissapointed with the purchase... oh well, hopefully in time I will get more used to it.

Wedge, it may be related more to the recoil of the cartridge. I say this because I got a large welt that opened up in the same location. I got mine from shooting hot 357 Sigs in my Glock 27 with an extra barrel. Next time I do prolonged shooting with this combination I will wear a glove. Regards, Richard.

I had a P99 in 9mm. Nothing like that ever happened to me. However, my snubnose .357 DID tear up my hand in the same place. Yes it was the recoil. The solution for me was to get the barrel ported. Make sure that you have the proper size backstrap installed. They are easy to change. A shooting glove might help too.

Just a friendly caution: Is your gun is carried, or kept around the house for defense? If so, you may want to avoid that shooting glove. It won't be on your hand if you ever need the pistol in a crisis. You may subconciously hesitate, or flinch the shot, if you're used to shooting with a glove on. :)

I have one of the earlier P99 and I've got over 5000 rounds through it. 2 limp wrist malfuncions early on and no problems or hiccups in over 4000 rounds. My gun shoots great and it's easy to shoot fast strings with it. I mean very fast. When shooting the pistol you have to shove the web of your hand way up into the tang of the pistol. You're girlfriend is probably holding it alittle low like my girlfriend did at first. She complained about the recoil and as I watched her shoot I could see the pistol torqueing in her hand. She was gripping the gun too low along the grip. Changed her grip , big improvement. I here about problems with peoples Walther's and I can't help wondering what they're writing about since mine has performed flawlessly. I wouldn't get rid of mine. In fact, I can't wait till the QA (Quick Action) model comes out I'll probably sell my SIG pro to get it. The Walther fit's my hand perfectly and I think it's one of the best combat pistols. Both the mag and slide release can be operated without changing your grip on the gun like you have to with almost every other gun out there. I love my Walther because it's a great gun with a great lineage. I also like brag that James Bond uses it to.

Victor...

That is EXACTLY why I have not bought a glove or even those padded shooting vests (for rifles)... I feel that I need to practice as I would need to use it in a real world environment.. and I don't see people stopping a burglar and saying "Hang on a sec while I put on my shooting glove/jacket"

I don't like any of that stuff becuase it deadens the senses and you won't have it when you need to use your gun(s) in a defensive situation.

Wedge, I agree with you until you start shooting a lot of rounds in one session. It doesn't both me to shoot 50 rounds of 40 S&W 180 gr rounds in my Glock 27. The same pistol with its 357 Sig barrel and 50 rounds of 125 gr ammo kicked my butt. 25 rounds was okay but by the end of 50 my hand was sore. Why punish myself when I can use a glove? Regards, Richard.

Well usually when I go shooting I bring several guns and put 100-150 rounds through each with no gloves. It doesn't bother me at all, but this Walther did. I am not poo pooing gloves, I just don't want to use them.
