What are some of the funniest, dumbest, or most dangerous gunsmithing ideas you have seen online? I heard one about the way to lighten a Smith revolver trigger: grind down the strain screw little by little until ignition becomes unreliable, and then start over with a new screw, and repeat until you arrive at the lighest trigger without being unreliable.

How about the guy who wanted to know if he could do a rebarrel job using one of the plastic handle strap wrenches he saw on TV?

Or the guy who thought headspace was adjusted by screwing the barrel in and out?

Or the guy who wanted to know if he could shoot .30-'06 in a .308 rifle if he ground off the back of the locking lugs?

A nameless Marine Corps Match Armorer...

once mounted a sling swivel on the frame (in the section forward of the trigger guard) of a Gov't Model 45 Awfulmatic.

It was a gag for match shooters.

After reviewing his Rapid Fire scores, someone asked for a bayonet mount.

On this board a guy mentioned his friends idea for scope mounting. The objective lens was in contact with the barrel so his proposed solution was to grind the barrel to get enough clearance.

Griz,
I have actually seen it done. One of our hunting buddies bought a Simmons .44 Mag scope for his old Ruger 77. Upon installing the scope, he learned that the rings for the 77 simply weren't high enough for the objective to clear the barrel. Without hesitation, he lopped a little off the top of the barrel with a bench grinder, and he has been killing deer with it since!

Gentleman cleaning custom rifle.
Patch stuck bout two inches from muzzle.
Takes it to "gunsmith" who cuts barrel off behind patch.
