Fun with glocks...

newbie 9mm

Well, i think i decided on the glock 17 for my first gun. Went to an IDPA match tonight, first one, and used a glock 34 on the first stage. Went ok, esp considering i was nervous as heck, and had 3 misfires (hit, but didnt ignite primer) in the first stage. 2nd stage was with a light, something completely new to me, and i loved it. 3rd was a fun stage, i tried to do it as fast as possible just to see how it was. Boy, was that fun!! Bad side, i gotta work on accuracy more..lol. Head shotted the hostage and missed the bad guy completely. why cant they make the paper hostages duck or something?? :)

All in all, i had a blast. tons of fun, yeah, i know, slow is fast and you cant miss too fast. I gotta work on sight alignment and stuff more, but as one of my first times shooting, i really enjoyed it and didnt embarass myself totally :)

Glock 34 felt real nice with the 3rd gen grips, but with the misfires, i switched back to the 17. Felt great in the hand, no prob with the trigger. Feels nice to shoot, easy to control. Im def going with glock 17 now. its a workhorse. When i get better, i may upgrade to a diff gun, but for now, i think its glock 17 for me!

I didnt get to shoot the walther P99, but i really enjoyed the glock.

That is awesome. Sounds like you had a great time!
I am a big fan of the G-17 myself but for my hands I like the G-19 better (little smaller). Might try both pistols before you buy either but you can't go wrong either way. The G-34 you were shooting needs to be looked at by a smith. That is not at all normal for any Glock, the G-34 should be just as reliable as the G-17.

Lot of competition shooters cut a few coils of the firing pin spring off Glocks to get a lighter trigger pull. Cut too many and you get misfires. I'd suspect the 34 you shot was a victim of this.

If you want to change the feel of the trigger, ie. lighter go to ,www.glockmeister.com, and learn how to take the Glock apart and change the trigger pull. Will take you about 5 min once you get the parts ( 3.5 lb connector, lighter trigger and striker springs). Good luck, Glocks are insteresting guns with a rabid fan club. I have a G23 for 1 1/2 months and shoot it in IDPA. 1.2M rounds thru it & no problems yet. I did put a KKM barrel on it due to the intensity of the 40 S&W round, and that I reload all my ammo.

Actually, the trigger didnt bother me at all. Its almost like I didnt even feel squeezing it when i was shooting. I never shot before, and with learning on glocks, you just get used to it. i dont know the diff between a good and bad trigger, the weights, or anything. Glock are definetly fun!

right now, my game plan is to get all the paperwork in, and then get a glock 17 when i can afford one, then a used 1911 .45 and work on customizing it and tricking it out. I am a knifemaker, so i know how to use some tools and will prob be making custom grips for it, trigger job, maybe a better barrel, etc so I can get used to how the gun works. It will be more for a learning experience and as a carry gun maybe. I always liked tinkering with stuff and i have some friends who customize .45's a lot, so its something we can do and enjoy.

I dont think the guy did anything with the coil springs. We dont know what exactly happened. maybe it had some gunk in there or something, i have no idea. for me, i dunno if the longer barrel will help for accuracy, i would rather learn on the 17 just because it will prob be what i carry if i do. and my accuracy needs work anyway, and i dont want to get used to the longe rbarrel and then switch to a gun with a shorter barrel and not be able to shoot that well.

no gun should misfire, let alone that often. It would be interesting to find out what types of primers were used in the ammo you were using.
Myself and other shooters I know who shoot Glocks all have had problems when reloading using the new gold Winchester Small Rifle and Small Pistol primers. Perhaps they are harder than the old silver ones. Havent had problems since switching to a different brand for just that gun.

I have a second gen Glock 17. I bought it on reputation only 10 years ago. I use to think it was the best handgun in the world. As an armed secrity guard I qualififed 100% with my Glock 17. with in the last 5 years I got on line. First thing I learned was my prior qualification was very loose scoring & not reflective of good shooting. Then I started to get serious about shooting. I started dry firing & shooting 100 rds a week for over a year. The more I shoot my Glock the less I like it. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger & with extended mag catch/slide stop, I like the controls. But at 21 ft my accuracy should be better. The Glock is sesitive. I don't know if it's the trigger or the polymer frame or what. Shooting a Glock is frustrating. I've rented an HK USP c 9 & shot that much better than my Glock. so I;m looking at other 9mm to replace my Glock 17. Glock has a cult like following. But there not for every 1. What you should do is test fire different 9mm to see which you shoot the best. I wish I would have done a proper test to see which handgun works the best for me. Now if you do a proper search & find you shoot the Glock the best then you have the confidence that you made the right choice to begin with. Take your time & pick the right handgun for you.

That's odd, I've shot 10s of thousands of rounds using the gold W-W SP & SR primers in pistols and have had no problem. I have 1.2M thru a G23 w/ a 4 lb striker spring without a failure of any kind. Interesting you should be having problems, keep us informed.
