Fun With Crime Stats!!!

This website has many countries listed, I think it is funny that many of the countries high on the list have very restrictive gun laws. Should be useful when emailing your Representatives.

After going through a lot of the states one thing is sure, gun control does not seem to change anything. States with gun control have just about the same amount of crime if not more.

I...don't think your stats are saying what you think they're saying.

Looking at the countries that are above us (as in, worse) in homicide rates, I'm not proud. It's like a who's who of third-world crapholes and struggling Eastern European nations. And the UK, with it's incredibly restrictive gun control, has about a third of the homicide rate we do.

Moving to states, MA has a rate that's about a third of that in MS, NM, or AZ and comes in at #35. With more restrictive gun control. Even California comes in at #10, below states like MS and SC. And New York is in the bottom half of the list, at #26.

So what I'm seeing is that as far as homicides are concerned, states with restrictive gun control have the same amount of crime or less that states with less restrictive gun control.

But of course, as always this ignores socioeconomic differences between states, other factors such as police organization and funding, education, etc. Which is why comparing crime stats from one place to another as evidence of the effectiveness of gun control is fairly useless.

One thing I have noticed though whenever stats are brought up: all else being roughly equal, it really does reduce homicide rate. Now, this is likely because other would-be homicides just end up being aggravated assaults instead (because a gun is more likely to kill than a knife or other weapon)...and this is shown by the fact that often overall crime sees little change.

The flipside(or proof, depending on how you look at it) of that would be Indiana, which has gun laws as good as about anywhere and ranks 25th. Dead center. Considering our Shall-issue, no test, dirt-cheap CCW and non-regulated private transfers, zero restrictions on mags and "assault weapons", Class III friendly attitude and the presence of the 10(12th?) largest city (plus that hell-hole Gary)we should be the Wild West.

But if you look at other crimes many of these "Better" countries have the same or higher crime rates.

How about Switzerland, where on the list is it?

Other than the rare occurrence of murder, I think I am happy with the crime rate in this country. There are also a few European countries that have higher murder rates with very low firearm murder rates.

I think that what we really will have is the same murder rate as we had before, just less firearm murders. Getting killed with a plastic bag ain't no fun.
