Fun at the range today

After I was done sighting in my Ruger I roamed around the range and came accross a BEAUTIFUL Ruger #1 with a custom stock. I asked the owner what caliber it was and he said .375 H&H Mag. I thought the barrel looked "stout" and knew it wasn't a bull barrel. He then asked me "if I wanted to shoot it"! Well, I've been aching to own/shoot a .375 H&H for years. I'm too old now to afford a hunting trip to use one but it's always been a dream caliber/rifle of mine.

So of course I said "SURE"!!! It had a low power scope on it and I settled in with it on the bench. I put my best "squeeze" on the trigger fully expecting to be knocked on my ass and it let me know I was shooting a big gun BUT the actually recoil was NO WORSE then my .300 Win Mag. Now I'm really drooling over owning one of these. Not necessarily a Ruger #1 but a bolt gun.

I love going to this range (Bristol, Wisconsin) since there is such a variety of different rifle preferences and most guys will let you shoot them. The last time I got to shoot a Martini rifle with the black powder cartridge. That was super cool also.

Another guy had a "like brand new" Garand. Man, would I like one like that!

I had a #1 in 458 for a while. I always let admirers shoot it. Gave me time to rest. Shooting from sticks it was not bad, from a bench it was amazingly accurate, but three shot groups were all I wanted. The gun was at it's best when used on old toilet bowls found in the dump.

I knew a guy at work that spent a day on the bench with his .458 Ruger 77 getting ready for his trip to Africa. The next day he could not raise his arm. His arm pit/shoulder was black down to his wrist and down his side to his belly. Another guy at work got a "deal" on a .458 Ruger (not the same one :D) and shot it once. Then he got up off the ground and went and traded it for a Weatherby .300 Mag.

I own a Winchester XTR M-70 in 375 Magnum. I found it very accurate shooting Sierra 300 grain bullets. The first time that I shot it I was wearing only a tee shirt. After twenty rounds my shoulder hurt so bad that I couldn't shoot my Winchester 30-30. I solved this problem by wearing a strap on shoulder pad. I think that it was a Pasts (spellinf is terrible). The pad with my Ten X shooting coat tamed the recoil a bit. I also set the rifle higher on the bench and pulled the rifle tight into my shoulder so I rolled with the recoil. With this method I could shoot twenty to forty with little discomfort. But when ever I took the 375 to the range it was the last gun that I shotl.

This guy was shooting 270 gr I believe. I imagine if you own one of these you handload since the prices for a box of factory are around $75....
