I have recently been made aware of the stated ammo filled with silicone or something?? Its' supposedly an extremely high penetrating round.. Anybody heard??

the 124gr EFMJ Expanding Full Metal Jacket (... 7.62 millimeter FULL METAL JACKET...)

It isn't known to be a high penetrator at all. In fact everything I've read says it penetrates a little less than the average 124gr Hollow Point (Gold Dot, Golden Saber, Hydrashock etc.)

It offers 2 advantages: almost guaranteed expansion (Hollowpoints don't always expand things get in the way and clog them up), and expansion through dry materials. So it SHOULD penetrate less through things like dry wall, and wood than a HP, and certainly less than a FMJ 9mm. Though I haven't seen any studies confirming this.

It works basically like a super soft point, i.e. a soft point that is very soft. Expands to about .53 every time in most of the tests I've seen. Penetration in bare gel... I've seen as high as 13" as low as 11"

Apparently it doesn't handle glass or steel very well (unlike the Gold Dot).

It was designed by Tom Burcynski (spelling?) of Quick Shock, and Hydrashock fame.

If you do a search on this forum for EFMJ, you should find the post that Tom himself contributed to. There are many others.

Most people conclude it is a great thing for people in areas that disallow Hollow Points (Europe, NJ), but may not be quite as good as regular Hollowpoints.

Personally, I like'em, a lot.

You can buy them REAL cheap over at: www.ammoman.com
the owner Eric, is a real nice guy. He also has a page with a LOT of information on the EFMJ on his site (which is a LITTLE hard to navigate).

The tip of the bullet has a form of silicone in it that is covered with the jacket. When the bullet strikes the target, it expands. It has been tested, and expanded fine when it was cold, and hot. It shouldn't have any trouble doing so if it is very old either.

The one downside: it's a very long bullet for its weight, hence, in order to get regular 124gr 9mm velocity, it must be driven to +P pressures.

That's all I can recall at the moment, I've spent a good deal of time reading about it, and I keep my eyes open for more.

Here's another review of it:

Here's the direct link to the page with the data on ammoman.com:
http://www.ammoman.com/webstore_9mm.htm
http://www.ammoman.com/40_EP_DESC.htm

e-mail me (it's in my profile) for all of the expansion data (from various sources) I've gathered on it.

If it actually penetrated 13.5" like it says on ammoman's sight I'd carry it without hesitation, but most other tests I've seen say it doesn't quite penetrate that far.

Why was this post so long? Cause you're a newbie, and from Michigan, and I'm a Michigander. That and I talk a lot.

He may have competitive prices on this ammo, but I don't consider $19/50 especially cheap. :)

Well it isn't as cheap as target ammo... but relative to the cost of other premium Hollowpoints, it's a steal.

The real bargain's don't come toll you buy in quantity. But...
for 50 HyrdaShock 9mm's it's $25

for 250 +P+ 124gr Hyrdashocks it's $119
for 500 EFMJ's it's $150.

On Cheaperthandirt.com
147gr Fed JHP is $8.74 for 20. That works out to $21.85 for 50, and it doesn't include shipping.

124gr Fed Nyclad JHP $21.93 for 50 rounds

124gr Fed Hydrashock (not +P+) $10.54 for 20 rds. $26.35 for 50.

So yeah, it is pretty darned cheap for an expanding bullet.

Must have seen that "Hunter" episode

When I came back home for lunch on Friday, I clicked the TV on, and there was an old rerun of "Hunter". Apparently, some guy was going around with "silicone coated bullets" that penetrated body armor easily.

The bottom line is this: no coating, be it Teflon, Silicone, or "Super Lube-X" will *ever* help a bullet penetrate further. It's just more garbage from Hollyweird.

If anything, according to the BATF report, there has never been a *single* incident of any police officer dying from a handgun bullet penetrating his / her vest.

The round you are probably thinking of was the KTW round. Unlike conventional cartridges, this one used a bullet made of tungsten, which was denser, and much harder than any lead bullet. The hardness of the tungsten bullet was such a concern for it wearing down the rifling of the barrel, that the makers gave it a coating of teflon to prevent it from eroding the steel of the barrel.

The Teflon coat did absolutely nothing to give it any penetration power. Rather, it was the extremely hard tungsten bullet that did.

These days, you hear a bunch of tree huggers screaming that we should replace all of our environment-destroying bullets with the new technology bullets. Little do they know, that those bullets are made of tungsten instead of lead.

A local store finally started stocking EFMJ 9mm this summer. Today I stopped by and they had $13.99/50 for the stuff! I was surprised they could do it for so low compared to the Ammoman prices.

Wonder why the EFMJ prices are being kept so low... perhaps they had trouble selling them to the Europeans? When they were originally talking about them they talked about how they would be more expensive than regular HP's. Are people just not taking to them and does Federal have a stockpile they wanna get rid of?

Anyone have any info on this?
