ok I know you guys answer this question like once a month, but herer it goes again.

Does teh full length guide rod for the 1911 do anything for you when you are using a high # rated recoil spring?

thanks

A slow hit beats a fast miss.

Really don't know,
Like I think I mentioned on earlier posts, I bought a used M1991 Commander, and it already had one installed (the one that requires a hex screw driver/allen wrench to remove. I'm going to replace it for a stock guide rod, since I like to be able to field strip w/o tools, and I don't see the point for having one that didn't originally come with the pistol (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).
Now, if it was a competition piece, it might be a different story, I don't compete, so I don't know. I just don't see what the difference is between one and the other, just that it's not as easy to dissasemble.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against improving it by adding ambi safeties or better sights, but I have never had any problems with stock guide rods.
Maybe someone can explain their benefit,
Cowboy

To repeat:

A full length guide rod aids in extraction and feeding.

It extracts money from the purchaser's pocket and feeds it to the maker of the full length guide rod.

I have a VERY knowledgable friend who asserts that the full-length guide rods help reduce wear on the pistol. I'm still trying to figure out how. My friend is a gunsmith and does work in a pistol shop, but I genuinely trust his integrity where it comes to selling things merely because it's "cool-looking," or money-generating.

I've been considering this one for a while. I put in a new 18# recoil spring and a little buffer thingee behind it, and looked at the recoil spring guide for a bit, but am so far of the opinion that it's more trouble (and money!) than it's worth. It makes take-down that much harder, and anything to interferes with your regular cleanings is to be avoided.

A full lenght gd rod is intended to keep the recoil spring from binding, nothing more. It will also give you problems in a gun if the (full size or compact) if the rear of the rod head is not relieved to avoid binding the barrel lugs or link.SC

Dont like'em.

Have never noticed any benefit at all.

But, they are a pistolsmiths dream, a great profit center.

Personally, I don't see them as necessary but don't find them a bad thing either. Basically if the gun comes with one, I keep it, if it doesn't that's fine.
