full auto shotgun??????????

Since I am only 16 years old, I go to high school and the janetor had told me something very interesting. He said he had an old New Haven 12 gauge and he said it was old and worn out and it for some reason became fully automatic. He said if you weren't carefull while pulling the trigger all three shots would go aff one after the other. Has anyone ever heard of this before? He said he sold it cause it was becoming unsafe to be shooting fully auto.

Sounds like the sear or sear notch had worn down (or broke) to the point where recoil would disengage it from the hammer. Not 100% sure as I'm not familiar with the gun in question.

a 12 ga automatic...consider the source. i have never heard of this, but then again, i don't know everything...or is it anything? i forget which.

A buddy of mine claims that he has shot a Rem 1100 in full auto. Claimed it had been converted for SWAT team use. I've never been able to confirm this, but how difficult would it be to do such a conversion? I'm not asking about class III and NFA rules, just if it would be possible and/or how easy the work would be to do.

I think he's yanking your chain. Why would you ever want to fire a shotgun full auto? I know they had the "Street Sweepers," but I think they were just semi auto.

The Olin/H&K "Close Assault Weapon System" is a 12-gauge semi- or full auto shotgun. It will fire commercial 12-gauge shells and a specially designed belted brass cartridge case with tungsten alloy pellets. Uses a 10-round magazine.

AAI makes a similar one that was designed for the US Navy.

There's been a few full autos around for a while, but there's darn little interest in them,at least as a shoulder fired weapon. In the 70s, Aberdeen Proving Ground experimented with autos in a dual mount, using a 9mm subgun loaded only with tracers as a impact marker. The idea was as a ambush buster for APCs.

The big prob is control. Muzzle rise is terrific, even with compensators and brakes.

Anyone that's ever had a shotgun "Double" on them knows where the second shot goes is way different from the first.

Considering the devastation possible with a large capacity repeating shotgun in a short time frame, a full auto shotgun would be kind of moot....

he said it was old and worn out and it for some reason became fully automatic.

A lot of old semiauto weapons can become unintended full-autos, I have used a "baikal" .22lr handgun (russian crap), and it sometimes fiered 2 or 3 shots whit one pull at the trigger.
It happens (usually) because the trigger mechanism is worn-out (or just bad from the start) and the hammer is released due to recoil and not becase you pulled the trigger.
It have also happened to A3G3 assault rifles, but then it usually is the fieringpin who is demaged, and always is sticking out of the bolt, causeing the gun to fire every time the action is closed.

When a gun does go into unintended fullauto it is time to make a boat anchor, or have it fixed by a gunsmith.

There have been a couple of commercial attempts at full-auto shotguns, but the real problem is (as mentioned above) controllability. I've seen some of the select-fire USAS-12s, and a Class 3 conversion done on an 1100, but these were an absolute BEAST to shoot. I figure, if you can't solve your problem with 1 round center of mass, then nothing short of an airstrike is going to help you out.:)

I fired the USAS 12 about 10 years or so ago.

I loaded up that stupid 20 round drum, leaned way into it, and squeezed.

Boom, right where I wanted, boom, about 4" above the first, then, in increasing increments, up to about 30 degrees above vertical (I was right up against a hill).

I redoubled my efforts, leanded farther into it and aimed below where I wanted to hit, same result, after about 5 shots, it was going to be pointed straight up.

At the time, I was 6', about 195 and in excellent shape.

It was a very handy weapon, and I thought it would have made an ideal entry weapon, very short in OAL, especially considering 20 12g rounds on tap.

A few weeks later, I saw a demo tape at a gun show, nothing but average sized guys in BDUs firing long, controlled bursts. No perceptable muzzle rise. Total bullshine.
