FTE's

A few weeks ago, my old 590 had a FTE, where (I was using the cheap estate target loads) hung up in the chamber, and I had to take the barrel off and poke the hull out with a cleaning rod. That was the only one I had before I traded it in. Anyone else have troubles with FTE's in their pumpguns, and why?

MagnunWill, if you've been following the forum for a while, or checked the archives, you'll note that some consider the R-870 Express to be notorious is this respect. Typically, the cause of the failure to extract/eject has been focused around the chamber's finish, or lack thereof. Most folks report no problems after they polish the offending barrel's chamber. Other problems might be found with the claw assembly and/or the shell stop/kicker. Of course, a feeble stroking of the action could cause similar problems.

Yes, I have heard that of the 870 Express, but my 590 seemed to be an extractor/bad ammo combination. It was cheap ammo, and it only did it that one time. The rest of the box cycled normally. I figured with dual extractors, it should have no problem with target loads. Also yes, it's chamber was not nearly as clean as my A1's chamber, it seemed just slightly rougher.

A gummy dirty chamber will snag a round... Also, if the shells you had previously fired were opening to a shorter overall length than the offending round, it could be fouled where the hull crimped section opened into a powder fouled spot.
with my .22 rifle, I know it is due to clean when the bolt won't pull out an unfired round and i have to fire it so it will pull out the brass...:o Yes I treat that rifle like the dirty dog it is and use the excuse that it likes a dung dirty bore for "minute of aspirin" accuracy:D

True- it also tried to lock up a couple times from using 3" magnum loads, and I assume those were due to the length as well. Well, I won't have to worry about it now, but it was still a great gun.
