FTE?

It means either Failure To Extract, or Failure To Eject.

And the people who use the acronym usually don't have the sense to provide even a hint which problem they are experiencing, then they get huffy if you ask ...

What's the big difference between extracting and ejecting? I think anytime a gun is problematic in getting the expended cartridge out of the gun you can use the term FTE. Just in case you also wondered, FTF is Failure to Feed. If you want to better understand both terms, buy a 3 inch barrel Kimber. I did and had both problems so frequently despite two trips back to the factory that I got rid of this nice looking and accurate little gun.

If you are talking about an autoloader, the terms are pretty much interchangable. However, in a bolt action rifle extracting the spent hull and then ejecting it are separate functions.

2 different operations on the pistol. Failure to extract is the case is still in the chamber, possibly broken claw or un-tuned extractor. Ejector is hit by the case when extracted and pops out the opening in the slide (ejection port). But what do I know?

Thank you. Now I understand. And Vito, I hadn't seen FTF yet, but thank you. I'm sure I would have wondered what it meant when I came across it.

Don

I have also seen FTF used to mean Failure To Fire.

Wouldn't it be great if folks would adopt a specifier for both FTE and FTF?
FTEx - Failure to Extract
FTEj - Failure to Eject
FTFd - Failure to Feed
FTFr - Failure to Fire

Regards,
Tom

PS Also, FTF in the sales fora would mean Face To Face, as in "WTB: Smith & Wesson Snubby (FTF in Illinois)"

One of the many problems on the internet is the use of shorthand expressions, acronyms and mnemonics in the place of actual words. I wonder how often a reader has no clue as to what is being said but is embarrassed to ask. Sometimes I read a thread and think W*F, but than I LOL.

Vito, there was a time for me when lol meant "lots of luck," which was short for "watch you six." I used lol so wrong, so many times when I first started using the internet I've often wondered what people must have been thinking when I used it. Nobody ever challanged me on it though when I inappropriately used it in a lot of serious discussions. Maybe I should be wondering about them? lol

TmLynch, adding in a acronym dictionary somewhere is probably a good idea. Being new to this, a lot of what I read is akin to reading a foreign language.

Don V, there are about 5 or 6 acronym dictionaries listed under the library link in the menu bar at the top of the page.

FLGR still has me stumped about half the time, when reading a post. I finally had to ask on a forum to find out the first time.
Full Length Guide Rod

Don H., Thanks for that information. I'm learning more and more what else is available on The Firing Line beyond the forum. I will look them up. They should be a great help.
