Front Sight on Winchester 70 Fwt?

My pet rifle in progress, a Winchester Classic Stainless in .308 needs a front sight to compliment it's Warne Rear Peep Base. The barrel is the featherweight contour-- not much meat for a screw to bite into... barrel wall .125" approx.

On the Smithy Forum, I discussed silver solder- basically cutting a ribbon of solder to fit, jigging it up, and sweating the sight on from there but George cautioned me to avoid "scale" in the barrel and my jig slips too easily... I'm hesitating on that job and reconsidering other solutions from the Rifle Forum.

I know I have seen Featherweights with a front sight. Pre 64's probably-- back when you could get iron sights... Anybody got an example? Is the Pre-64 Featherweight the same contour as the Classic Featherweight?

Has anyone drilled and tapped a featherweight contour .30 caliber barrel sucessfully? Any tips or traps?
