I'm a long-time long-gun owner (3 shotguns - 3 rimfire rifles - 2 centerfire).
I've decided to move from long to short (size doesn't matter in my book - I'm over 40).
I'm not really CCW-minded - although I'll likely go to CCW class, primarily to master my weapon. I like to shoot as much as I can - but don't re-load (that might change).
I went to the store the other day - and the dealer said "Hold as many as you can - and buy what feels good in your hands."
So far - the leader is a Colt 1911 Government (upgraded grips - still rosewood, though). It really felt right. I liked the thickness, the weight distribution, and the operation/action.
I thought I was most interested in a Beretta 92FS --- until I held it (way too bulky). Not very keen on the lack of safety for the S&W Sigma (price is fantastic). Mildly curious with the 24/7 Pro (great price at Buds Gun shop). I keep thinking that an XD or 24/7 OSS might be interesting (didn't like the safety on the XD - haven't tried the OSS).
I don't see myself joining the glock cult (still not convinced that composite is worth the price).
I'm not in a hurry - and have sworn not to buy anything I haven't held at least once. (try out at the dealer - buy at Buds - unless the dealer has a killer price --- thank the dealer by buying ammo there).
Any suggestions of other handguns to consider?
The only non-semi-auto that I'd consider would be a Dan Wesson Pistol Pack. (collectible value, as well as practical use).
