On Feb. 26th Don was checking his trap line In Northeastern MN and was charged by a Cow Moose.
For starters when he pulled to the side of the road he got sucked into the ditch and figured he would get help after checking the traps and was only in the woods 20-30 yards when he heard a grunt. The pup he had with him that he was watching for a friend started to bark and that was probably why the moose charged as fast as it did. Don said its a good thing he had a big pack on his back because the cow stopped the crud out of him and the pack took about 90% of the blows. The dog did get the Moose off him and was able to stay away from the moose running in the snowshoe tracks.
After getting back to the truck he had to shovel it out!
Don is a Native American and told me he is the only Band member from the Fon du lac Band that is trapping this year.
Don is also Uncle to my Granddaughter, and an Emergency First Responder for us 30 miles north of town.
He was trapping Pine Martin and they are worth about $60.00 this year.
When i asked him if he trapped wolves, well the Reservations here in MN do not allow Wolf trapping on Ceded lands. When I asked him if he would if he could he said, Hell Yes!!, he said he would love to have one over the back of his couch!!
Don is nursing a very sore shoulder and hip, but the wood pile therapy is making things better.
