I have a friend who is moving to monsey NY, just outside of the city, He has an old ruger mark I .22lr pistol 4" barrel anyways he wants to know if he can keep it there or does he have to liscense it or what. He isn't going to be carrying it and he said it just self defense. I told him for self to defense to get a bigger caliber, but thats another story. He says if he can't take it with him he is going to sell it. I tried to talk him out of it, but he has kids in the house. (I'm sure lots of you guys have kids too, but never had a problem!)

I might want to buy it from him, but I really don't want to take advantage of him. Anyone know a reasonable price for it, if he does decide to sell it?

Check out the NY State Police site at:
http://www.troopers.state.ny.us/PistPerm/PistPermINDEX.html

Choose the Frequently asked questions option from the left hand frame, then scroll down to the part about relocation.

The quick and dirty is that he has to take delivery OF HIS OWN GUN from a NYS licensed pistol dealer AFTER applying for and waiting (mine originally took 4-5 months) to get his permit. He could ship it to the dealer now and have them hold it, or he could leave it in IN with a friend who could then ship it.

I don't keep up on the value of used guns anymore. I decided years ago to never sell one again.

tell him i will adopt this orphan. he can come and visit whenever he likes. ask him if he has ever heard the Hank Williams Jr. song about the "Country Boy Can Survive" it says it all.

I'd say reasonable price for the piece in reasonable condition with one or two mags and adjustable sights is probably $125, $100-$110 with fixed sights.

I really loved that stuff from Dizzipator about paying a NY dealer to transfer the gun from your friend to, well, your friend. "Shall not be infringed" indeed.

Thanks for the replies I think I might buy it from him, He is working for priceline.com in stamford, CT but will live in NY. At least its a vote against hitlery.

Hey! Every vote counts and here in NY we sure as hell need them.

Your friend should find out who does the licensing in the county he is moving to. Some are stricter than others. Most require living in the area for at least SIX (6) months before applying for a pistol permit. He will also probably have to supply references on his application to allow the PD or licensing agency to do a background check. In my county the four references must provide addresses and phone numbers and must SIGN the pistol license application. Your friend might be better off to go to a pistol licensing agency and let them guide him through the process, but this will probably end up costing him about $500 or so. If he has any type of record for any reason anytime in his past it should cause problems, they even check his military records! With fingerprints!

Geting a pistol license in NY is a real pain, especially in the downstate areas :(

Perhaps you should buy his pistol and save him a lot of grief, tell him to get a shotgun for HD instead.
