Friend has got the .40 bug.

A friend is looking at some .40 cals. He's narrowed it down to the Walther P99, the HK USP40, and the Steyr M40. (He's also looked at the Beretta 96 and CZ75, but those didn't appeal to him.)
Our local gun shop has all 3 in stock now. This gun will be primarily a home defense and target shooting weapon, not concealed carry.
Out of those three (price not being an issue), are there any personal preferences or concerns?
Thanks!
John

My first handgun was a Glock 27, but the full size Glocks dont seem to agree with my hand - they just dont feel right.

I'm looking at the Steyr M40 as my next purchase. After putting 4-500 rounds through over the course of several rentals, I absolutely love it! Excellent accuracy, the sights are FANTASTIC, I like all the safety options (Especially the non-conventional and slightly confusing manual safety - great if a BG ever gets ahold of your weapon). From everything I have read, any M-40 over the 10K serial # is a finished piece of work.

On the downside, you will not be able to get any hi-cap magazines for the Steyr. That is from what I know the worst complaint about it so far. Additionally, the trigger break is a bit sudden (for me anyway). I plan on getting a gunsmith to fix that tho.

I would recommend your friend to fire all of the weapons he is considering and go with the one that feels the best in his hand. IMHO, the Steyr is a fine handgun.

I'd also vote for the Steyr M40: very accurate, easy to shoot, easy to clean, and durable. And it has 5 safeties that work great (3 passive and 2 manual).

Also, keep your eyes and ears open for a major Steyr GSI press release within a few days --- guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Carry is not a issue, I would blow off all those guns mentioned and go with a full size firearm, 5 inch barrel. Since money is not a problem, tell your friend to shell out about a grand and get a gun that will serve the purpose (target shooting). Any gun is a good house gun, good target guns is what is more expensive. Look at a good full size 1911, the Beretta, H&K Expert, Glock 35 or Sig 220Sport. Some of these guns are under a grand, the Glock and Beretta. The extra money can be used for match grade barrels and a trigger job. Some extra magazines too.

You do not have to spend a fortune to get a dependable, accurate .40 S&W caliber firearm.
You might want to check Rugers fine "P series" firearms.

Any news on any of the series from Ruger? I've read that the P series are 9mm, but that the KP series was .40 and are very similar. The cost is pretty decent. I havent read anything on their performance.
Also, does anyone know how well the S&W SW99 performs? The salesman at the local shop told us that it was an exact duplicate to the Walther P99.

I didn't like the Ruger .40s I've shot, and I can't believe someone suggested a S&W! AAAAAGGHHH! I've heard that buying a Walther equals buying a S&W, but I'm not sure. Buy a Glock 23 or 22 or 35, and spend the money on the hi-caps. Or, find a friend that is a cop, and have him (or her) buy you hi-caps for 20 bucks.

Claemore: I'd respectfully advise against your suggestion of having a cop friend buy LEO only hi-caps for you. The technical legal term for what happens to you if you're caught with them is "deep doo doo".

Hey Claemore,

I am w/ branrot on this. Of course we know all these high cap mag laws are unconstitutional. But,

If you get caught with a hi-cap mag stamped "Law Enforcement Only", and you are not an LEO you are in some serious Black Angus Excrement.

Dont do it. All it takes is a pull over and "Terry Frisk" if you are ccw carrying post ban pistol with LEO Mags, look out for Janet Reno's minions to come down on you hard.

Say good buy to owning any firearms for the rest of your life, not to mention possible prison time, legal fees, fines etc.

If he doen't mind the DAO concept, have him check out a CZ 100. Street price should be under $350, for a ported, polymer framed pistol designed from the start for the .40. It also has all-steel 10rd mags that were designed that way. As light as it gets in a pistol of this nature, and accurate too.

How about a SIG P226 or P229 in 40 as another option? I think they are excellent pistols like the Glocks, HKs ...

One other benefit to this is that you can buy extra barrels in 357 SIG and 9mm for a gun chambered in 40, giving you 3 caliber pistol if you choose to go this route.

In this case - I'ld opt for the HK USP .40 Compact. Its a flawless pistol. There is very little that you could discount it on. Flawless reliability and accuracy. Its Ugly, its Brutal and it isn't going to win a lot of friends that way - but it does what it is supposed to do. The differences between it and the full size are really only splitting hairs.

I bought the HK USP .40 cal.

But only because I already owned a Walther P99 in 9mm. Didn't want to duplicate the gun so I bought the HK.

Great gun.

The Walther's better.

The law is unconstitutional, thus it is null and void. F**k em! If they tried to put me or any of my friends in prison it would be a mistake. All bravado aside, it is the truth! I will fight with my last breath for the 2nd. I know that is politically incorrect, but again, f**k 'em! Another reason I do not give money to the NRA anymore, is because they support that unconstitutional law along with all the others. Not a flame, but the way it is.
