I was at the gunstore the other day looking for a new ranch rifle that I could just throw in my jeep. They had a French MAS rifle in .308, going for $200. My new rifle needs to be something that can take a beating, reasonably cheap, and decently accurate. Are they MAS rifles OK? What about the price? Does anyone have any experience with one of these? Any input would be appreciated!

Was it the MAS 36 (bolt action) or the Mas 49/56 (semi-auto)?

I have both the Bolt and Auto-Loader, but in the 7.5French loading and like them both. Some of the conversions were better than others so you need to watch out.

the semi auto isn't bad. i sold mine, so i guess i wasn't all that impressed, but when you find a decient one, it'll shoot 1.5 inch groups with hunting ammo. not a bad beater.
as for the bolt action, get a mauser or enfield,instead of the mas. it's a fine gun, but the bolt is just too wierd.
