"French Gray" Finish?

Greetings all,
I've been considering this finish for my Thompson Contender, and also maybe for a 1911 I'm considering having customized. Does anyone know about the "French Gray" finishing process described on this site?

I've heard good things about this gunsmith, and the finish seems just what I'm looking for: a durable, matte, satiny gray. Any comments, warnings, alternate suggestions? Thanks all,

The French Grey is a dull flat grey that steel gets when not polished. You can simulate this very easily by having the parts glass beaded. One warning however, this leaves the metal wide open and VERY prone to rust. I would not do a French Grey wihout some sort of sealer. I have several bolts done this way, they look nice, but one really needs to keep them oiled up.
