Freedom of Information - swedish style

Sweden - the current EU Presidency - has (since the 18th century) a principle of total administrative transparency. This means that any document originating from or transmitted to any public office is available for review to every citizen on simple request. You may perform unsupervised online searches...

This includes:
- letters to any official (the prime minister, etc.)
- minutes from all levels of governments meetings
- military documents
- everybodies income tax statements, criminal records, etc.

Some people in Brussels would have EU procedures classified as secret information (as if hiding behind obscure language is not sufficient), but the euro sceptical swedes would want them available.

What is the status of the US regarding FoI?

The news reader of the (socialist) media here in Austria said "It does have disadvantages, for example some neonazis obtained the private addresses of politicians and shot them".

The Freedom of Information Act

I dont think my income tax statements should be available for all to see.

The FOIA is a joke. We still have classified documents pertaining to the most mundane things that are over 60 years old. Alot of FOIA documents are unreadable because of huge tracts of black lines running thru "sensitive" material.

Some may think me crazy, but I think something profound happened in Roswell, NM in the late 40's. Trying to dig up information that FedGov has on the incident, even though it has been released due to the FOIA, is pointless. All of it is blacked out.

Gee, what can be said about the EU?

We're not in, and we don't want to be.

If the EU had to publish everything, it would go down in flames. Guess
all these treacherous actions, scandals and attacks against the
freedom of the individual countries (you can sing a song about the
Brenner, we can do the same about Sabena (the Belgians and the French
are blackmailing us about the SAir group having to invest billions
into rotten airlines that should get the axe now), our banking secret
and soon probably about our gun laws.

On the last subject: Molon Labe!
