SIGNS POINT TO A CHILLY
HOLIDAY FOR THE CLINTONS
Thursday, August 31,2000
By GREGG BIRNBAUM
Rick Lazio's fans in the Finger Lakes region expressed outrage yesterday that local officials have ordered them to remove "Lazio" signs from their yards - just days before the Clintons arrive for their upstate vacation.
Some residents of Skaneateles, where Bill and Hillary Clinton will spend the weekend, were visited this week by village police and received letters informing them that they were violating an ordinance barring political signs more than 30 days before an election.
"It was pretty disappointing to have our town officials try to pull this scam," said Susan Moran, who shooed away a cop and has refused to take down the sign in her yard.
"They are playing the Clintons' game now - trying to deceive us," Moran told The Post.
Moran claims - and even the Skaneateles mayor admits - that the local ordinance isn't clear. It says political signs can be posted only for 30 days - but it doesn't say anything about only 30 days before the election.
Mayor Don Price said he has thrown in the towel and won't enforce the "ambiguous" law.
"Some people have become emotional about this election," said Price, who doesn't run on a party line and who refused to say how he is registered (sources say he's a Democrat).
Price insisted villagers supporting both candidates were asked to take down their signs, but Lazio backers said they believe they were singled out.
Local Republicans chuckled that the village's effort to "clean up" Skaneateles for the Clintons has backfired and said Lazio signs are now popping up all over the place.
"I'm sure the village wanted to put on a good facade for the Clintons," joked local GOP chairman Don Stanford.
"But quite frankly, it's not going to be a nice welcome for Mrs. Clinton. There's a lot of people putting up [Lazio] signs."
