Here's a good example of children protecting themselves as a sort of counterpoint to Hallmarks BS reply. This was taken from The Orange County Register's "California Briefly" section of the 05Apr99 edition:
Police arrested the alleged partner of a robber fatally shot by a 12-year-old boy during a store holdup in Compton.
Michael Anthony Powell, 19, of Santa Rosa was taken into custody at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, shortly after family members said Powell had seen himself on television and wanted to surrender, police said.
Powell was booked for investigation of murder and held without bail. He could be charged with murder for the death of an alleged accomplice during a felony.
Powell is suspected of holding a gun to the head of a 62-year-old clerk during a March 28 holdup at a small store. The robbery went awry when another employee knocked the gun away and began struggling with the gunman.
A 16-year-old accomplice, identified by relatives as Dennis smith of Compton, began beating the elderly clerk, whose grandson grabbed a handgun kept in the store and shot him to death, police said.
The gunman then fled.
