was there a previous version of the 48 (one produced, say, around 75 or so)? i know there is a forum, but I don't want to register for another one if someone here knows. I couldn't find info on the evolution of the 48. My dad has one with a cracked stock, and i'm under the impression that the modern wood won't fit it.

It's my understanding that the 48 AL is relatively unchanged over the years; but, it's been available for a lot of years. Franchi is now part of the Beretta group, and the 48 AL is still in their catalog. Why not contact them directly about parts availability?

Don't make the mistake of confusing appearance with model/ID.

The Model 48-AL has been made continuously since 1950, with the only differencee being in the relative sizes between 12ga & 20ga parts.
It is a long-recoil gun, with the barrel recoiling back into the receiver to operate the feed mechanism.

What you might be confusing the 48-AL with are the very similar-appearing Black Magic, Prestige, & Elite Models - which are all gas-operated guns.
