Well, after agonizing over what to pick up for a long range hunter, my patience paid off big time.
I was looking at .50 BMG's (not seriously as a hunter..), .338 Lapua, .308 long range setups, and could not make up my mind to save my life.
We burned through enough tax money to eliminate the .50...I'll own one someday, but not yet. The .338 Lapua ended up just being too new and difficult to seriously entertain.
I kept coming back around to .308 and 300 Win Mag as the available calibers of choice.
In the back of my mind I really wanted a heavy barrel 7mm Rem mag, but could not find one, even after watching the classifieds for the past year, I had not seen one come by.
Cabelas had nothing in that category, but they did have the .308 and the 300 Win Mag in some very nice setups...
A couple days ago I decided to give Sportsmans Warehouse up in SLC a try...
I walked up to the counter and told the kid what I was looking for, he turned around and pulled a Remington Sendero with the 26" stainless fluted barrel in 7mm off the shelf....it was love at first sight...this rifle is PERFECT, it's exactly what I've been looking for and it doesn't hurt at all that it's Beautiful as well!!
It was the only one, it took me about 5 seconds to decide that I wanted it.
I have yet to shoot it, probably today, and in reality I'm not expecting perfection out of it until I get a chance to break in the barrel and figure out which loads the rifle likes. Not to mention picking up some glass worthy of it...
I have my Bushnell Elite 3-9x50mm on it now, good enough to get it going.
I'm really excited and couldn't be happier. I know that alot of people don't like the weight of the Senderos, but my Ruger M77 mkII in 7mm is almost 10 pounds, so it's not much of a difference. Plus I carried the M60 for our squad in the army, so I'm used to the weight and actually like it. Just have to sling the rifle and not carry it in your hands the whole time....
Anyway, just had to say something!!! I can't wait to shoot it...
