Sadly he wants 650.00 but its probably the nicest 28 i've seen in person. Guy died kids sold it off with his taurus and rossi. Man I wanted it.

Does it have box and papers?

Can the shop be talked down any in price?

Do they have lay-a-way?

Man, that really is one nice 28, and if you take care of it- even at $600 or $650 out the door- you'll never lose money on it if you keep it a few years.

I just checked gunbroker. It's not a ridiculously high price. Just a high price.

If I wanted it I'd offer $575 and go to six. The seller must have some wiggle room.

Perhaps it's just the picture, but the finish on that looks more like the "new" S&W bluing than the "old" bluing in that it has more of a black hue than blue. This makes me wonder if, perhaps, the gun has been refinished (though if it has, a very nice job was done and it may very well be a factory refinish). While I'm sure that it would be a fine shooter either way, a refinish detracts from the collector value and would make $650 more overpriced than it already is. FWIW, a local shop has a very nice 28-2 with S&W target stocks on it for $450 or so.

I thought the 28 had the black hue and the 27 had the high polish deep blue.
I seem to think I read that somewhere. Can anybody verify that?

Yes, the model 28 doesn't have the highly polished prep before it is blued giving it that dull blue finish. It should look just like the picture. I'm on the look out for one just like that :)

Actually I might put money down on it and gift it to my dad. :o His father carried a model 28 and he loves them. A mint looking one would be neat to give him. um the tag on the gun said box and papers but the clerk said he wasn't positive.

650$ for a pinned barrel VERY nice 28?
You don’t buy it for 650 your crazzzzzy. .:D
Offer low and work up but don’t let 650 stop you.

It seems high but I'd imagine there is some haggling room in there and that is a gorgeous 28. Before last year I'd say no way but after getting one myself (not nearly that nice, by a long shot but a very good price) I would be sorely tempted.

I thought the 28 had the black hue and the 27 had the high polish deep blue.

The bluing was the same color, but the M28 was not as highly polished and thus had a more matte finish rather than the high gloss of the M27.

If you compare the finish of a brand-new M27 to a vintage one, you will notice that while they are both highly polished and have a "shiny" finish to the point of being almost reflective, the color of the finish is different in that the newer gun will have more of a black hue while the older one will be more blue in color.

The reason for this is that different chemicals are used in the bluing of today than that of yesteryear. Supposedly, S&W was forced to change their bluing chemicals due to environmental regulations. In a M27 and M28 of the same vintage, the same bluing chemicals were used, and thus both models' finish was the same color, but the M27 was more highly polished before it was blued in order to get the gloss finish.

As I said before, however, the revolver in question may have the original finish and the blackish hue to the finish may just be an effect of the photograph. The "matte" bluing of the M28 does tend to come out looking more black in photos even if it does have the original finish. For comparison, here is a picture of my own M28-2 which still has the original bluing.

Price is a little high...if it has not been refinished.../ but not unreasonable for a dash 2 example if its original.

If its been refinished ...its way too high..../ and personally I wouldn't want it, if its been refinished ...or I'd drop the value to $ 250 or so ... but like others said, I can't tell from your photo.

A documented factory refinish doesn't detract that much from the value of a firearm; though, obviously, no finish is as valuable as the original finish in like-new condition.
