Found a 260 Remington

homesick

New member
I have been on the look out for some time (about 4 years) for a 260 Remington. I found one today its a 700 Remington SPS looks like new and previous owner said he didn't shoot 2 boxes of shells through it. I'm looking forward to working with it.
My question is it has stamped on the barrel 1 in 8 twist. I have several 700s but none have the twist rate marked on them? Does any one know if this was standard practice from Remington and is there a reason for this?

Hopefully it's true. I've had people tell me they didn't shoot two boxes of cartridges through guns that had beat up stocks and worn bluing on them. My response is usually you many not have but somebody did or something along those lines.

You got a 700 action and in a great cartridge. Ditch the stock and put it in something decent then add a Timney trigger group and you're set.

I think Rem stamped the twist on this one because their original .260s were 1 in 9 twist (I've got one). I don't know if Rem changed the standard twist to 1 in 8 or if they just made a special run with that twist. Last I heard, they were still producing .260 rifles with a 1 in 9 so you may indeed have something somewhat unique.

Thanks for the reply's I'm guessing the 1 - 8 twist rate will work better with heavier bullets? This is only a guess :)

The one guy I REALLY believed traded (If I'm remembering correctly) a 460 Wby Mag, or a similar sized round

He had the only box of ammo he had ever purchased, and it still had 17 rounds unfired

I have seen some guns with lots of wear from carry/transport, but very few actual rounds, but most were from PD's or the Dept of Correction

He was probably afraid to squeeze the trigger on it after 3 rounds. He should look for that fellow in the other thread that isn't recoil sensitive and needs all that to hunt elk, maybe one day but can only shoot to 300yds and chases deer now sometimes.

I was alluding more to Jimbo who pulls the gun from a well worn case that he's plopped down on a tailgate that still has the season's deer blood all over it.

my father bought a savage 99 in 300 savage right after he came home from ww-2 and hunted with it for over 60 years and i don,t think he fired 200 shells out of it. his idea of a sight in was to throw a gallon can as far as he could and shoot one or two shots at it. he still hunted(sat for hours at his favorite stand) and shot his deer at 35-60 yards when he got one. he told me after one of his hunts that he watched a large buck for over a hour at less than a 100 yards, but did not shoot as it was to far away. when his gun was sold to my older brother it got shot even less as my brother does not hunt. eastbank.

The Rem twist is 9". My 6.5-06 is a 9" twist, but it shoots 120s, 129s, and 140s just fine. Savage spins at 8". You'll love the 260 as I do.

Snyper I can only take the word of the man on how much the rifle had fired. I had no reason to question this as the bolt face still had bluing on it and the rails where the bolt slides has no wear on it. The rifle also has Leo rings and bases and a 2X7 Redfield Avenger on it plus a sling. The man wanted $425.00 for it, I do have a bad heart but so far my mind is working fairly well, I gave him the money:)
I also have a 375 H&H Remington 700 CDL I bought about the same way, I was told it had not shot a 1/2 box of shells. As soon as the doctor clears me from cardio rehab I'm gona shoot that too.:o ( however this one is not a priority)
As you can tell I live in central Florida where black guns are the big demand, so if you like the classic stuff as I do most of the time it's reasonable.
