fouling buildup

Its enjoyable to clean, and thats the truth. Just another fun excuse to play with your toys.

What is the easiest way to eliminate that annoying little buildup ring right at the spot the forcing cone becomes rifling?

brushes and patches are useless, cant apply pressure on them.

foaming cleaner the cheap mans answer?

Buy a Lewis Lead Remover Kit from Brownell's.

It has one head that's a rubber plug over a brass body over which is wrapped a brass screen.
This is used to pull leading out of the bore.

The second head is an aluminum cone shaped cleaner over which the brass screen is wrapped.
This is shaped to cut all fouling off the forcing cone.
The two slightly overlap so the entire barrel gets cleaned.

Even if you shoot only jacketed ammo you should still have the Lewis kit for the forcing cone cleaner.
It also removes carbon and copper build up from the forcing cone.

Another endorsement for the Lewis Lead Remover.

BTW, I used a piece of flattened brass to remove the buildup on the top strap.

went shopping for brass wool or chore boy type copper pads. no one, and i mean no one, has them. most hardware stores dont even know what brass wool is.

Assuming your BC gap and timing is within specs and your alloy is not pushed too fast, I highly recommend the Lewis Lead Remover.

I was about to recommend Chore Boy to the OP when I saw your post. FYI-Walgreens carries Chore Boy. That's all I use for lead removal or the rings the OP mentioned. No solvent, just a little bit of dry Chor Boy wrapped around a patch. It's amazing, and cheap. Don't get copper plated pads. They must be 100% pure brass.

well i gotta say lead fouling SUCKS.

i did get the lead out of my barrel. after 5 hours of scouring it with brass brushes and chemicals, i managed to get creative and bent a .22 caliber brush into an L shape and was able to focus on just the forcing cone area. got 90 percent of it out.
then this morning fired 7 rounds of .357 jacketed and 92 rounds of 130 grain jacketed. VERY fun. and NO LEAD.
now just a bit of 38 special case mouth buildup. working on that.. killed a .45 caliber brush half the bristles fell off. and wore out two 38 caliber brushes as well.

I did manage to find one of the federal swaged lead 158 grain lrn. despite the cupped base of the bullet and the microscopic dents on it. there wasnt any lube on it. seriously.
half the dents are gone, the base is slightly distorted but MELTED. to slow to expand, but hot enough to melt. only have 180 rounds of it left.
