Dear Concerned Gun Owner:
On Tuesday, August 8, the Fort Worth City Council will meet again to
discuss possible restrictions on gun shows. These proposals could
range from banning these events altogether from city-owned facilities
or a "Clinton/Gore-style" plan requiring federal records checks prior
to the sale of any firearm at a show -- even between individual
private collectors and occasional sellers who are not required to
possess a federal firearms license.
The Council's Safety & Community Development Committee has already
approved a resolution recommending Congress change federal law to
establish a records-check system for private collectors and occasional
sellers to access at gun shows. (It also encouraged the government to
respond to such requests in a timely fashion and work to protect the
privacy of those involved in the transaction.) But anti-gunners on
the council and in the community will not rest until they chase these
shows out of local public facilities altogether, or halt sales at such
events by requiring all transfers to be approved through the flawed
National Instant Check System.
Here's what you can do to help preserve gun shows in Fort Worth:
Attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 8, at 7:00 p.m in
the Pre-Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 1000 Throckmorton.
There will be a limit on testimony for both sides, so there is no
guarantee that you will be able to speak. But it's critical that we
have a strong showing from concerned gun owners, as the anti-gunners
will surely be there in full-force.
Call and e-mail Mayor Barr and council members to let them know where
you stand on these issues. Even if you do not reside within city
limits, you may attend gun shows in Fort Worth or just want to make
sure they can continue to be held there. Contact information is
provided below.
