Forgotten what model my old .44 was, can anybody help?

This is my first post and I hope there's room here for a Brit used to be a keen pistol shooter but now post ban misses his handguns like nothing on Earth...

I was hoping that I might re-kindle a few memories by joining the board (I still shoot a 10/22 and PCP air rifles, but they ain't the same).

This is a bit of an embarrasing one... I was putting together a list of what I USED to own.

I got as for as my old S&W .44 and can't remember the model number.

It was a .44 mag, N Frame, 8 3/8", unfluted cylinder, full under lug in blue.

At the time it was the poor mans (that's me) Classic Hunter.

I can remember it was a really pussy cat to shoot even with some pretty extreme loads :)

Can any of you help refresh my memory...

Cheers

That undoubtedly a variant of the Model 29, likely made up in small numbers for some distributor. Smith & Wesson make guns for export that are not sold in the USA, and I have never seen one just as you describe.

Have you thought of emigrating? I doubt private ownership of firearms, even handguns, will be completely outlawed here in our generation.

Thanks for the reply.

I found the 29's on the S&W web site, but couldn't find one with the full under lug.

Your comment on 'specials' being made for export has made me feel sick to the stomach that those SOB's in the UK goverment melted down something a little bit special  ...

It was big and heavy and shot like a dream. A real tree splitter...

As for emigrating, it's down on my list of things to do. The company I work for has considerable interests in the States and I'm waiting to make the move but to have the work pay for it as a hardship posting... If only they knew how badly I want to move over.

Bwahahaha...

Unfortunately that's still only an idea rather than a reality...

I worked with a guy who was British and here in the states. He took a pay cut, worked as a security guard, and went back to college, just to stay here and enjoy some freedom. He used to tell me of old gun stores that he visited when he was young, they had boxes of Lugers that they sold cheap. We've all come a long way.

The M29-4 came in the Classic Hunter configuration. It was a full-lugged, 8 3/8", SB, TT, TH, non-fluted cylinder model with rubber Hogues. 2,500 of them were made in 1989.

I am thinking it is similar to one I had. A S&W M29-2 blued Target model. Can you describe the sights better? Front sight in particular. IIRC, these came with Partridge blade front sights. My own had a Millets RWO rear sight. I still remember the 4-way screw for adjustment.

Gents,

Thanks for your comments, I'm thinking it's the M29-4 as it didn't have the fully adjustable target sights but did have the Hogue Monogrips.

I bought it in '91

I've dug out an old (pre-digital) photo, please excuse the poor quality.

I guess there's only 2499 of them now :( , but it enjoyed itself whilst it was around, being fed on an almost exclusive magnum (and then some) diet.
