Foremost model 6400 30-30 "WHAT" ! a bolt action 30-30 ????

UPDATE

I thought I'd just come back to this thread Rather then start another one . I've had the rifle for quite awhile now but only took it out once . I shot about 14rds through it to make sure it worked . It went bang and seemed like it may be some fun to shoot .

Fast forward to X-mas and a few gift cards . I ended up getting the reloading dies and the Williams peep rear sight for it . The rifle is drilled and tapped for the side scope mount and I hoped the peep sight would line up . It does not and I'll need to have it tapped for the sight .

I did some research on the savage 340 front sight and all said it's a dove tail . Well this foremost is installed using 2 screws so that's different for sure . I'd like to replace the front sight as well but not sure what to look for . Help please ??

Now to reloading for it . I've already done some seating depth testing . I can confirm that mag length is the max I can go . Even if I wanted to single shot load from the top . It's not a good idea . The ejection port is quite small and any round much longer then mag length will not eject if I want to unload the rifle . The tip of the bullet hangs up on the front of the port and the case stays held to the bolt face by the extractor . This makes for a quite interesting problem on getting the cartridge out .

I was hoping I'd be able to load any old 308 bullet I wanted to but it has become quite clear I'll need to load this rifle pretty much as if it were a lever gun . Not a big deal just not what the plan was .

I've also found that Boyds Makes after market stocks for the Savage 340 E . Do any of you know if this Formost will fit/work in that stock ?

All in all I'm really looking forward to getting this thing running the way I want . New sights and stock should really kick this thing up a notch .

Here is the front dovetail ramp you need. It only uses one screw but mine attached very securely on my 340a. This will allow you to use whatever height front sight you need. I used a Lyman #31 .360 height brass bead sight to get my Williams FP in its mid range at 100yds

I was able to source a lot of parts for the 340 during my searches so if you have any questions, post them up!

Thanks SA , I think those will work . Any reason you went with that height ?

The stock front was not tall enough for the Williams FP-340-tk sights. I was 8" high at 50yds on initial sight in

Nothing specific about this rifle, but I always find it amusing and interesting that so many older "cheap" rifles and shotguns seem to outperform today's $$$$ "wonder rifles," and give very little grief.:D

Mine is a tack driver even on box ammo, I can't wait to handload for it. I can ring the 18" gong at 250yds fairly regularly, off-hand standing, with the Williams peeps.

We have a old cast iron window weight hanging at 250 as well, its about a foot long and 2" in diameter. We keep it painted blaze orange so its easy to see. I have hit it twice out of ten tries with this 340, thats not bad for my "corrected" 50 year old eyes. No recoil either, its like shooting a .223 bolt gun. Smooth as a good whiskey.
