I have read that the 9mm P99 is made exclusively in Germany. This past weekend I was in the process of purchasing one in OD Green when the store owner mentioned S&W. I asked what they had to do with the Walther and he said that the gun was made by Smith and pointed to the Walther USA on the front of the slide.
I questioned him further and he assured me that it was true. I did not have enough confidence that he was wrong and terminated the deal.

The gun had the Walther scroll on the right side of the upper,
and Walther USA and I think Wortham, Mass. on the right front of the slide. I did not look for the eagle. Do you think he was just totally mistaken. I can still get the gun at a very good price. Thanks

Proofmarks

I had read all 9mm P99's are imported from the Motherland(Germany)The .40sw are the one's you have to really look at.If it has the proofmark on the rear right side of the slide it's the original. The proof mark is a Eagle over the N.Smith and Wesson is the American importer, how they get the right to put their seal on imported 9mm I don't know. They mass produced 3 thousand slides for the .40sw version and that's where all the problems began.Walther also dropped the price roughly $150 so, it's currently selling around $480 on the net,and at your local dealer.SAFE-SHOOTING!

All 9mm P99s are made in Germany. They will have the german proof marks on the slide sort of an eagle with an N over it.

The confusion comes from the fact that S&W took over the importing of the guns when Interarms folded. After the agreement Walther sought to distance themselves from S&W and Walther USA was formed.

The only link they currently have with S&W is that Walther makes the frames for the SW99. Some will tell you the SW99 is the same gun only cheaper. Nothing is further from the truth. Examination of the S&W variant next to a true Walther P99 will reveal some stark differences in overall finish and quality.

Look for the proof mark and buy with confidence. Do a search here in the forums when the function comes back up. The P99 has a big following here and there is a ton of information supplied by Rovert, denfoote, and others about this wonderful gun in the various threads.

I can't believe that dealers don't know these things. You would think that if they're in the gun business, they would know the gun business.

The 9mm P99 is indeed Walther made. Just look for the Eagle over N. Hopefully with WaltherUSA now out of business, Smith and Weasel won't screw things up. I'm really hoping that Earl will eventually get the importation rights. Maybe if we all wrote to Germany to tell them how discusted we are with the way S&W is handling things they'll pull out of that deal with them.

Not just the gun dealers, I have been present at car dealers and home electronics stores when a customer who has thoroughly read the sales literature came in to look at something, and heard the salesperson exclaim "Hey, I didn't know it would do that!".

Selling guns and knowing about guns are two different things. Just because the guy is standing behind the counter doesn't mean he knows anything.

Heres a shot of the "eagle over N"--

I just got my P99 in .40 last week. It has 3 proof marks. All are on the right side. The one on the slide is in back of the grip cuts. The one on the barrel is below the Walther banner, under the letters WAL. The one on the frame is forward of the trigger guard, just below the accessory rail track. One look is all you need to see all three.

Bama2,

Click on the link to my web site below my sig and view the proof marks and info that you should be looking for on a true German mfg. Walther P99.
