Who knows if your kid will even appeciate that gun in 2016 or so?
If it were me, I'd get him a new gun made the year he was born. Yeah, you may not think new guns are as good as old guns... but it WILL be an old gun by the time he is your age. In fact, it will be a classic with real meaning. And By 2016 or 2026 or 2056, what you see as an inferior product today will most likely be one of those "wow, they really don't make them anything like THAT any more" by the time the kid can keep the handgun himeslf. Think if he was born in 1973. I'm sure people then would have told you to get a post-war model or a early '50s magnum or such. But today that '73 is a gem. Same with an '05 down the line.
