For looks or Function ?

I'm kinda new as a gun enthusiast, bought my first Colt here while back & now it seems I can't get enough of this
stuff, I really enjoy seeing & reading about you fellas' custom pistols & such but there is one thing I can't figure out, on all the custom autos you see now they all have front cocking serrations. Is this a functional aspect of the gun the shooter will use or is it mainly just to dress up the gun ? probably a stupid question but like I said I'm kinda new at this.

thanks for any responses.

A bit of the practical and the fad.
Some people use the front serations to check if the chamber is loaded.
It's also the latest fad. In a few years, they will probably disappear, to be replaced with a new fad. Remember a few years ago, you couldn't HAVE an auto unless it had the "hooked" trigger guard.

Fad or not...

I find the front serrations a useful addition to a carry gun for the purpose stated...chamber checks. Ever try to pinch the slide back from under the barrel on a heavily sprung slide with sweaty hands?

Not that the "under slide pinch" is the only way to chamber check, but it's the way I'm use to and it's the way I practice.

I'm with AC. They're for the birds. My only wish is that Springfield will make the full-size stainless Loaded available without the front serrations by the time I have the cash to get one.

Fad. I prefer a 1911 without the front serrations also, but then again, I kind of like the beaver tail looking hammer spur, too. I sure as heck wouldn't be doing press checks in any sort of stress situation.

For those that don't like serrations, ArmySon posted here a while ago about taking a surface grinder to your slide to remove any unwanted markings. With some care, serrations should be removable with this same process. Original thread lies here. Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the opinions guys.......I checked out that other thread (boy did that get ugly) anyway
I haven't got my 91A1 customized the way I want it yet, just a trigger job & polished & thraoted the barrel a tad, just a few more & I'll be done...commander style hammer, high viz sights, one of those tricked out triggers, shoots pretty accurate but I'd at least like a hand fitted barrel bushing, & I love those cocobolo checkered grips, & will probably get a couple of 8 rd Mccormick mags. I believe these are some pretty humble modifications, oh yeah I believe I'll have to pass on the front cocking serrations.

I think front slide serrations are on par with tits on a duck.

Both my P12 and SA Champion lack front serrations, which I consider a bonus.
