Am in Western Washington.

Presently sighted in for 200yds with Sierra 165's @ 2450fps, think i need to up velocity??
Thanks.

This is a large forked horn muley I took in Black Hills of South Dakota.

During mid-1980's I hunted elk in Oregon with same .308 carbine and load. This is an accurate load:

48.5 grs. H414 with 165 gr. Sierra Pro Hunter. Muzzle velocity was approx 2576

I took a large bodied bull at about 150 yards with two shots into the chest. He staggered and sprinted for heavy cover. But I found him about 75 yards away and fully expired. The sturdy built Sierra bullets did the job! But for last couple years, I've relied on Winchester Fail Safe 150 grain ammo. This Premium bullet breaks heavy bones and does not bend or break apart!

Good hunting to you.

Did you work up the load or just pick one? 2450fps for a 165 is slow. What powder are you using?
Nosler has a limited amount of load data on their site. The make of the bullet doesn't matter though. Use data for a 165 with IMR4064. 42.0(2554fps) to 46.3(compressed)(2767fps). Mind you, the velcocity isn't as important as the accuracy. The .308 loves 165 grain bullets and IMR4064.
Once you have found the best load, sight in 3.3" high at 200 and you'll be on target out to 300 yards.

Try some H380 and WW 748. They will get your velocity up where it should be. The 165 should be up there over 2600 or thereabouts. I sight in 2" high at 100 and can shoot with a dead on hold out to 250 before I have to add some Kaintucky windage.

Your load is loping along for a 165gr bullet, but if it's accurate, it'll still do the job.

I load my 180gr .308 loads ( using either a Fail Safe, XLC FB, or I'll be trying the new Nosler E-Tip in a few weeks) to 2550-2600 fps. I agree with above poster that WW 748 is a good powder for this. There are others, of course, but it's the only powder I use for my .308.

Thanks for replies..

Using 748 about 42.5 grs. Sighted in @ 200 using the Standard 200 target, with this load and from prone I can hold three shots into the "X".
Just for Elk want to have a better load and sighted in for 300.

That's why I'm looking @ IMR4064 or RE15. Do shoot the NMC with M1 in 7.62 using the 168's., but that on paper not a animal.
