Foam for pistol safes

The foam in my sentry pistol safes is as thin as paper. Is there a better product you guys have found that protects the gun? I ripped out the foam in my gunvault because it was one piece and it prevented me from easily accessing the battery compartment. I replaced it with this rubber matting that is sold in Lowes. It's the stuff that mechanics use in their toolboxes. It emanates a "rust inhibitor" to protect the tools. It works, but every time I pick the gun up after sitting on it, there is an oily imprint of the matting on the gun. A wipe with a rag and it is gone, but am wondering if some simple foam might be a better choice.

what about a welcom matt? They have versions with a short carpet sort of material bonded to the rubber that would not hurt the gun finish and I bet wear like iron.

An old mouse pad. If you replace it with foam, try to find Closed Cell foam. Closed cell foam will not absorb your oil, but more importantly it won't absorb moisture.

now THAT was a great idea! Mouse pad... genius!

My safe came with just thin carpet on the bottom and the bottom was below the edge of the door jam which had a sharp edge. I was afraid while removing a rifle it may get nicked so I went to Home Depot and bought those thick rubber mats for garage floors. I cut it to fit, covered it in carpet and put it in giving the floor much more padding. A roll of door edge guard from an auto store put around the door opening keeps the guns safe when taking them out of the safe.

In some types of fireproof safes, the foam used is a special material that expands and forms a seal when it gets really hot.

If the foam in yours was so easily removed, the stuff you removed may simply have been padding to protect the guns. (And if your safe isn't fireproof, it's clearly a non issue.)
