Foam fill 870 synthetic stock?

An old customer just bought a new Remington 870 with the synthetic stock. He doesn't like the "THONK" sound it makes if he bumps it. He asked me if he could fill the stock with expandable foam from Lowe's.
I've heard of this, but never done it. Anybody ever done this, and any pointers?

I did it to a Russian "Saiga" rifle. It didn't really do anything though much to help the situation. Pointers: Make sure that you mask EVERYTHING you don't intend to get the stuff on. Have some alcohol ready. I'd suggest you put the stock into a plastic bag and then mask it off around the rim. It will continue to expand more than you think it will. Putting the buttplate on is a bad idea... just cut the ball off after you're done.

You might try to get one of them "Foam-in-place" packs from a Parcel store like Mail Boxes, etc. to keep it from getting too messy. I haven't tried this though.

Another trick to doing this is getting that clear plastic tubing and put it where the stock bolt is so that you can later remove the stock if need be.

Just put the tubing tight against where the bolt is and then foam it in place and allow to set before applying more foam..... once the tube is set then fill her with foam.

Sounds tedious to me. Why not just fill the stock with old rags or a piece off an old and used up McKenzie target cut to shape?

Dave McC has the idea... make upa tool kit... (takedown rod, small solvent bottle, bore brush, and whatnot) then wrap it in a silicone cloth, and stuff it into the stock... pack with a few more rags, if need be...

filler, and emergency cleaning kit in 1!

While you are stuffin goodies in the stock, why not add one of Dave McC's homemade recoil reducers ?

(Striking self on forehead with heel of hand) Why didn't I think of that?(G)...

There oughta be room for lots of stuff, a reducer, some emergency tools and ammo, lunch.....

With a modicum of work here, we can make his stock less drummy, give him a complete survival kit and get the weight up to bout lebenteen pounds. What recoil ?
