FNX 45, surprise

Funny thing happened earlier today. I had been thinking of getting another 45. I have a 45 1911 (Colt) so I want a full size non-1911 this time. I had it narrowed down to a Glock 21, Glock 41 or M&P 45. So, I went to the range and rented all 3 of them to shoot. I didn't shoot any of them particularly well, I think because I have been used to shooting the 1911. The guy working at the rental counter said "why don't you try on of these" and hands me an FNX 45 full size. They are kind of promoting FNX's this weekend and have a rep in the store. I went back to the range and tried it out. I was surprised, maybe shocked would be a better word, at how much better I shot it than the Glock or M&P. The recoil was noticeably less, as well. I was as accurate with the FNX as I am with my 1911. I don't know if it was an aberration or just one of those guns that just fits me perfectly. I could go there tomorrow and lay an egg trying to shoot it. I didn't particularly like the looks of it and it had the ergonomics of a Glock with a larger grip. The price was a little steep too. My only regret was that I used up most of my ammo on the other 3 guns.

Now I have something else to consider.

What were they asking price-wise? Unless it was the tactical model, it shouldn't be much more than the Glock 21/41

$600-$650 is normal for an FNX-45.

I have the 9mm FNS 9c and had a similar experience. When I bought it I was relatively excited but after I shot it.... pure perfection. It's since replaced just under a half dozen pistols I thought I'd never part with.

I think they were asking around $650. But they told me they were having a promotion, so I guess they were sandbagging a bit

The FNX-45 is big, fat chunk of gun... but shoots very nicely. The 15-round mag is pretty awesome, too (which accounts for the whole 'big fat chunk of gun' thing).

$650 is a pretty good price for it - I usually see it for quite a bit more at gun shops.

FN

I don't have the FNX but do have the FNP .45 Tactical with a Trijicon RMR. It is amazingly accurate, totally reliable (after the "mystery" repair by FN). You could literally hit squirrels in the head at 25 yards if you are capable of it. The only negative is it's a big pistol.

The FNX-45 is a great pistol. Sure, it's huge. Gotta make room for 15 rounds! Yeah, the cheese-grater surface of the grip could be prohibitively uncomfortable with some kinds of carry. At least it makes for excellent purchase while shooting. I always thought it was cool that the safety lever gives you the option of locking or decocking. It covers the SA/DA guys and the cocked-and-locked guys. After checking five or six online retailers, $650 seems about average.

I would strongly considering a used HK USP .45, which you can get in that range also. Likewise, it's a big hunk of gun, but probably a little slimmer than the FNX and of unquestioned quality and performance. ;)

The USP is another great gun. There's no "probably" about it. The USP gives up a few rounds to be slimmer and not quite as tall. Interestingly, it is heavier and longer, even with a shorter barrel. Here are the listed stats:

Capacity: FNX = 15, USP = 12
Barrel Length: FNX = 4.5", USP = 4.41"
Overall Length: FNX = 7.4", USP = 7.91"
Overall Height: FNX* = 6.33", USP = 5.61"
Width: FNX* = 1.58", USP = 1.26"
Weight (empty): FNX = 33.2 oz., USP = 34.78 oz.

HK definitely has a well-deserved reputation for durability and reliability. However, does anyone doubt FN on those merits?

H&K versus FNX

The FNX Tactical's slides are machined from the factory to accept many red dot sights. The H&K's are not. I've owned 6 H&K USP's and preferred the FNP with the RMR Trijicon. So I've kept it. It is as accurate as any pistol I've owned.

To be clear I've fired thousands of rounds through H&K pistols without a single malfunction of any kind. And I do like them a lot. I also like the FN FNP/FNX Tactical. Mine has been as good in every way. However, the ability mount a micro red dot from the factory swings the balance to FN (for me - your mileage may vary).

As an aside, I can't imagine why all manufacturers do not mill their slides for red dots. It's a no brainer for older eyes, and the population is growing older on average. I currently have 4 pistols with red dots and shoot them all more accurately than those I own without them.

FNX-45 No Surprise

I have owned my FNX-45 for several years. I think $650 is what I gave for mine. Its been exceptional. I have around 2,000 rounds through mine now, and just once did it bobble. On one the first few magazines, it hesitated loading a cartridge. It chambered and fired, it just hesitated. I bought mine for home defense, so the size and weight isnt an issue. It really isnt that big, its just that there are guns that are smaller. My 4" GP100 is larger than the FNX-45. Great gun.

These are my favorite Hi cap 45's on the market. Most People are surprised how accurately they can shoot it. :D Hard to beat 3 mags and 15 + 1. FNX also has several improvements over the original FNP.

I had an FNX 45 and the 40. Both were phenomenal weapons (capacity, trigger, ergonomics, recoil management, controls, everything). I put a Hogue wrap around on both of them and my accuracy increased quite a bit and the only malfunction I had with either one of them was using the Blazer aluminum ammo. I unfortunately got rid of them to pay for an AR15 and a 1911. The 40 was the one I wish I still had.

I too love my FNX45, I use it for a side arm when I fill in at my LGS and as my house gun. Love the way it shoots and the mag cap is great. It would not be my first choice for ccw but i have carried it a few times just to see if I could.
