FN49 gas adjustment

Appreciate any advice regarding gas sleeve adjustment for FN49 in .30-06. I did a little bit of adjustment from open (blew the upper forestock off) to the point where the spent case ejects about 2 feet. Is there an case ejection distance that is considered optimal for the FN49?

I'm not sure with the FN49, but the FAL, which is almost identical in operation usually quotes 10~15 feet as optimum.

It also depends a lot on what powder you are using.

An FN49 using IMR4350 will not only toss cases a (great) distance, but will try to rip the rims off during extraction. (hard-won lesson back in `88)

Faster IMR3031 will balance that out and you can adjust the gas port from there.

`Figure same distance as a Garand: 8-10 feet

Additional information

Thanks for the information. I'll try for about 10 feet of case ejection distance for the FN49. Some of the fired cases had a bit of rim gouging.

This is the load I used and it is as close to a M1 Garand cartridge loading as I could duplicate.

Bullet: Sierra 150 gr FMJBT
Powder: 47.2 H4895
Primer: CCI 34
Case: Full length sized
OAL: 3.25"
Approximately 2700 fps

There is a technique (again for the FAL) where you reduce gas till the rifle malfunctions (FTE) then give it 2 more clicks of the regulator. You might be able to do something similar by going down to the 2' ejection then adding 1 more click.

I say 1 more click because the FAL has a lot more clicks so one on the '49 is probably 2~3 on a FAL.
