FN PBR

I have the opportunity to get into a gently used FN PBR in .308 for well under a grand. The rifle also comes with Millet glass, 20 MOA base, bipod, and 100 rounds. This would be my first bench dedicated bolt action rifle. My goals are to learn something new, (distance shooting, MOA and Mildot). I don't plan to hunt with it as I prefer the 6.5x55 round for that. My local range has targets to 600 yds. I've searched the net and these forums, but if you have experience with the FN, I'd love to get your .02.
Thanks

I have one, like it a lot. But that may be too high. The base comes standard on the rifle. They made several versions of that rifle with many costing around $700 new. That is what I paid. How much under $1,000?

I have no idea what a used one would bring, haven't seen any for sale. I'd find out exactly what it is since the prices on those vary from $700 to close to $2,000 new depending on the exact version you buy.

$800 including the scope which retails for about $450, They get decent reviews but it's most likely not one I would choose if it were not included. I'll check the model. Thanks loads

$800 with a decent scope sounds good to me. They don't have the reputation of the Remington or Savage rifles.....yet. But based on shooting mine I'd take it any day over the other 2.

I read an article recently where the FBI had recently selected one of the FN models as their sniper rifle.

Here is a brand new one on gunbroker. It's a 300 win mag but NIB it can be bought for $829

I haven't seen one offered in 300 Win mag yet. Maybe they are now, but all I've seen are either 308, or 300 WSM.

I have one in 18". Or it may be 16". I have not been out to the range in 6 months and can't remember. I do remember that I love it. The barrel was actually made in CT at the old Winchester plant and says as much. I paid $600 from CDNN and put a Bushnell Elite 4200 3x9 on it (I think I paid about $270 from Amazon) . At 100 yards (the max at my range), it is not a problem to do 1 MOA groups. I bought the short barrel because I'm no marksman and permanently attached to New England where you're lucky to find a sightline of 50 yards. I expect I'll never make a shot over 300 yards in my entire life and the short barrel is a joy to move around.

$800 with a $450 scope is a no-brainer. Especially if it is longer than 18", the short barreled ones tend to be less popular (unless you are me). A lot of people really like the Winchester 70 extractor, which is what the PBR is, a Winchester 70 with FN's name slapped on it. Not that FN isn't a quality brand!

Hey, if you don't want it, I'll be happy to buy for "well under a grand" and pay the shipping!

FN purchased Winchester quite a few years ago. The first FN patrol rifles were made up from a variety of parts, some old Winchester inventory, some new FN produced. The receiver on mine is actually an older Winchester classic action with the old style Winchester trigger with a 20" FN produced barrel.

Also purchased from CDNN. If I remember right I had the option of a detachable mag for around $600 or floorplate at $700. Since spare mags held fewer rounds and were $50 each I chose to stay with the floorplate. Barrels could be had in several lengths form 16-24" with 300 WSM as an option as well.

I'm pretty sure all current produced guns are made strictly of all FN parts, which will for the most part interchange with the current FN produced Winchester 70 hunting rifles.

Mine came with the cheap Hogue stock,(which was quickly replaced) as do most of the sub $1,000 guns. Other than a better and more expensive stock I'm not sure what you are getting when you buy one at close to $2,000 vs the $700 version. Mine has a super trigger and is more accurate than i can shoot it.

Thanks for the info gents. The rifle has a 24" non-fluted barrel and detachable magazine. The stock is Hogue, but claims to be factory bedded. I forgot to mention, the trigger was worked over by a local smith and adjusted at a bit over 2 lbs. break. The deal also includes a bipod.
I am most pleased to hear many of you like the FN in general. Good accuracy and reliability are as important to me as a good deal.
Thanks again.
